Supported Applications
The Omega HSM50 Digital Handheld Soil Moisture Meter is designed to check the moisture level of soil or other similar materials. The device measures moisture content using a 2-pin electrode probe that assesses the conductive ability of the sample and converts it into a percentage reading.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The HSM50 operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C and requires operating humidity less than 80% R.H. It measures moisture content from 0 % to 50 % with a resolution of 0.1 %. Accuracy is specified as ± (5 % + 5 d) F.S. @ 23± 5°C, where F.S. denotes full scale. The sampling time is approximately 0.8 second.
Configuration Options
The series features a durable ABS-plastic housing and an LCD display measuring 28 mm x 19 mm. Key functional capabilities include:
- Data Hold: Freezes the display reading.
- Circuitry: Custom one-chip microprocessor LSI circuit.
The meter is powered by a DC 1.5 V battery (MN1500-4) with an approximate current draw of DC 12 mA. The included probe features a stem length of 8.7" (220 mm), a diameter of 0.4" (10 mm), and a total combined length (meter + probe) of 15.4" (392 mm). The meter body dimensions are 6.8" x 1.6" x 1.6" (172 x 40 x 40 mm).

How does soil temperature affect the accuracy of the result?
Thanks for your question. The operating temperature for this model is 0° to 50°C. Outside of this temperature range, the meter may no longer read properly (or at all) and the accuracy rating no longer applies. Please contact our Tech Support if you have any further questions for your application.

What is the operating principle for this meter? Is it robust to salinity in the soil? I need to measure soil moisture along the coast.
The probe would be able to measure the moisture in most soil types and if there is salinity involved it is recommended to clean the probe after each use as to avoid the
initiation of corrosion.

I got the probe but the value jumps from 2 to 40, I stayed more than a minute and the reading didn't got stable. 1. How long should I stay to get it stable? I know my range must be between 35% and 40% 2.Does the reading depends on the sample size?

My HSM50 moisture meter is not powering on and is out of warranty. I replaced the batteries, but no joy. Is there anything that I should be checking? Are repairs available?

Does the product work well in agricultural settings to measure soil moisture under pivot irrigation?
The probe is the only portion that should be exposed to direct moisture. The display area which holds the electronics should not be exposed to direct irrigation water spray.

Would this handheld moisture meter work to detect moisture in powders?
Very dry soil can have the consistency of powder so the HSM50 should allow a relative measurement of moisture in powder if it is similar.
