Supported Applications

The Omega RTD-800 Class B series consists of general-purpose industrial-grade resistance temperature detector (RTD) sensors designed for a wide variety of measurement applications. These platinum-element sensors are configured for specific environments including HVAC systems, laboratories, and workplace air temperature monitoring. The series supports surface temperature measurements on compressors, flat or pliable surfaces where cementing is required, and structure temperatures in power supplies, electronic equipment, and mechanical structures.

For fluid dynamics and pressurized processes, the series offers closed-ended stainless steel probes suitable for liquids and gases within pressurized systems. Specific configurations address air temperature applications requiring direct contact with a housing or mounting plate installation.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The RTD-800 Class B sensors utilize platinum elements with a resistance of 100.00 ±0.12 Ω at 0°C and a temperature coefficient (alpha) of 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C, meeting Class B accuracy standards.

Operating ranges vary by configuration:

  • Air and surface measurement models operate from -50 to 230°C (-60 to 445°F).
  • Closed-ended probes for liquids and pressurized systems support a range of -200 to 750°C (-328 to 1380°F).

Standard electrical connections consist of 3-conductor, #26 AWG stranded nickel-plated copper cable with PFA insulation and jacketing. The standard lead length is 1 m (40"). Wetted materials include stainless steel, plastic, epoxy, and PFA-insulated lead wires depending on the specific housing configuration.

Configuration Options

The series offers multiple mechanical configurations to accommodate different installation requirements:

  • Housing Materials: Stainless steel, Plastic, Aluminum.
  • Process Connections & Mounting:
    • Direct contact housings for air and gas (stainless steel or plastic).
    • Epoxy-encapsulated round stainless steel housing with #4 screw mounting.
    • Closed-ended stainless steel probes with 1/4 NPT or BSPT threaded fittings.
    • Aluminum housings machined for #4 screw installation on flat surfaces.
    • 1/4" stainless steel hex bodies featuring #8-32 or M4 threads for tight spaces and bolt holes.
    • Closed-ended tubes with round mounting plates (two-hole).
  • Electrical Termination:
    • Standard: Stripped leads.
    • Optional OTP: Heavy-duty connectors (add '-OTP' to model number).
    • Optional MTP: Miniature connectors (add '-MTP' to model number).

The series is supplied in economical 3-packs. Custom hole configurations are available upon consultation with Custom Engineering.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the RTD-800 Class B family differ primarily by housing geometry, mounting interface, and temperature range capability:

  • Air/Gas Surface Models (RTD-805-B, RTD-806-B): Feature stainless steel or plastic housings for direct contact with air/gas; limited to -50 to 230°C (-60 to 445°F).
  • Screw-Mount Surface Models (RTD-809-B, RTD-830-B): Designed for flat surfaces using #4 screws or cementing; stainless steel with epoxy encapsulation or aluminum housing.
  • Threaded Process Probes (RTD-810-B, RTD-810M-B): Closed-ended stainless steel probes with 1/4 NPT or BSPT threads for liquids and pressurized systems; extended range of -200 to 750°C (-328 to 1380°F).
  • Hex Body Models (RTD-850-B, RTD-850M-B): 1/4" stainless steel hex bodies with #8-32 or M4 threads for installation in tight places; range -50 to 230°C (-60 to 445°F).
  • Mounting Plate Models (RTD-860-B): Closed-ended stainless steel tube with a round mounting plate and two holes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product We have been ordering and using the RTD-850-B for at least 6 months now. We have used about 9 of these RTDs. Performance wise they work well. However durability is not great. The adhesive holding the RTD into the well often breaks loose from sustained operations between 200-210 C. Product is rated for 230 C.

The datasheet states +/-0.12%, but also states class B accuracy per IEC 60751. Class B from my understanding is +/-0.3C + 0.005*t where t is the temperature being measured, in absolute value. Is 0.12% correct for the whole temperature range?

Asked by: joebot5
Thank you for your inquiry joebot5. According to our documentation for Class B accuracy, the formula should be the Class B = ±(0.3 + 0.005*t)°C or 100.00 ±0.12 O at 0ºC. That's correct, the accuracy applies to the entire range.
