- Series ID SH-DH-FS-OV
Supported Applications
The Omega SH-DH-FS-OV Series consists of ceramic insulators designed for use in thermocouple and RTD assemblies. These components serve as electrical isolation elements within temperature sensor constructions, accommodating various wire gauges to ensure proper separation of conductors.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series supports two primary material types with distinct maximum operating temperatures:
- Mullite: Maximum temperature 1600 °C (2910 °F). Used in Single Hole Round (SH), Double Hole Round (DH), and Double Hole Oval (OV) configurations.
- Steatite: Maximum temperature 1200 °C (2190 °F). Used exclusively for the Single Hole Fish Spine (FS) configuration.
All dimensions provided in specification tables are nominal figures only. The series is specified by model number, material type, wire size compatibility, and physical length or diameter depending on the insulator geometry.
Configuration Options
The SH-DH-FS-OV Series offers four distinct geometric configurations to match specific assembly requirements:
- Single Hole Round (SH): Available for wire sizes 8 AWG/0.128 in, 14 AWG/0.064 in, 20 AWG/0.032 in, and 24 AWG/0.020 in.
- Double Hole Round (DH): Available for wire sizes 8 AWG/0.128 in, 14 AWG/0.064 in, 20 AWG/0.032 in, and 24 AWG/0.020 in.
- Double Hole Oval (OV): Available for wire sizes 8 AWG/0.128 in, 14 AWG/0.064 in, and 20 AWG/0.032 in.
- Single Hole Fish Spine (FS): Available for wire sizes ranging from 8 AWG/0.128 in down to 20 AWG/0.032 in, with specific lengths defined by model number prefixes such as FS-400, FS-330, and FS-260.
Model numbers follow the format Type - Wire Size - Length. For example: SH-1-8-100, DH-1-8-100, OV-1-8-100, and FS-400-8-(t). Fish Spine (FS) variants require a specified quantity of 500 or 1000 pieces.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the series differ by geometry, material composition, and dimensional specifications:
- Mullite vs. Steatite: Mullite insulators (SH, DH, OV) support higher maximum temperatures up to 1600 °C (2910 °F), whereas Steatite Fish Spine (FS) insulators are rated for a maximum of 1200 °C (2190 °F).
- Geometric Differences: Single Hole Round and Double Hole Round beads provide cylindrical symmetry, while the Oval variant offers an elliptical cross-section. The Fish Spine design features specific length dimensions ranging from 2.79 mm (0.11 in) to 10.2 mm (0.40 in).
- Wire Size Accommodation: Each geometry supports a defined subset of AWG wire sizes, with OD and thickness values varying accordingly.

Single hole alumina thermocouple sheath
They work quite nicely, the only caveat is that they are a bit more brittle than expected, so when trying to break them into shorter pieces they often shattered rather than getting a clean break.
