Supported Applications

The Omega FLD Series comprises direct read variable area flow meters (rotameters) designed for precise metering of gases and liquids. The series supports applications including the metering of carrier gases in chromatography, indicating and controlling gases in manufacturing processes, liquid and gas measurement in laboratories and pilot plants, as well as general flow and level indication.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The FLD Series operates with a standard accuracy of plus/minus 5% of full scale (FS) and repeatability of plus/minus 0.25%. The useful flow range is defined as a minimum ratio of 10:1, where the minimum flow rate is 10% of the maximum rate shown for each specific model.

Performance limits are established by the following specifications:

  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 200 psig/13.8 bars
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 121 C (250 F)
  • Process Connections: 1/8 NPT female inlet and outlet connections

The series is calibrated for specific media, including Carbon dioxide (CO2), Air, Water, Nitrogen (N2), Hydrogen (H2), Argon (Ar), Helium (He), and Oxygen (O2). For the FLD Carbon Dioxide subset specifically, available ranges include 1 to 35 L/min and 20 to 200 mL/min for 65 mm tubes, and 100 to 300 mL/min or 10 L/min for 150 mm tubes.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable dimensions across frame materials, tube lengths, float types, valve options, and mounting styles. Models are grouped by fluid type (e.g., FLDC for Carbon Dioxide), tube length (65 mm or 150 mm), and frame material.

Construction Materials

  • Flow Tubes: Heavy walled borosilicate glass with rib-guided or fluted designs for stable readings.
  • Floats: Available in glass, red sapphire, 316 stainless steel, carboloy, and tantalum. Suffixes denote material: G (glass), ST (316SS), C (carboloy), SA (red sapphire).
  • Frames & Fittings: Aluminum with black anodized finish or 316 stainless steel.
  • O-Rings and Packing: Buna O-rings in aluminum/brass models; FKM O-rings in stainless steel meters. Optional perfluoroelastomer and EPR are available.

Housing & Mounting Options

  • Standard: Panel mount with side panels (aluminum, black anodized), front shield (polycarbonate resin with longitudinal magnifier lens), back plate (1/8 in thick white acrylics).
  • Bench Mounting: Convertible to bench mounting using optional FLTR-1, FLTR-2, or FLTR-3 acrylic tripods featuring built-in spirit levelers and leveling screws.

Valve & Service Options

  • Built-in Valves: Standard 6-turn needle valves; optional -HRV suffix for a 16 turn high resolution non-rising stem valve (available on 150 mm meters).
  • No Valve: Available with the -NV suffix.
  • Oxygen Cleaning: The -02CLEAN suffix indicates oxygen cleaning service.

Key Product Differences

The FLD Series distinguishes models by fluid calibration, tube length, and frame material. Carbon Dioxide specific models (FLDC) are available in 65 mm and 150 mm lengths with stainless steel frames.

  • Tube Lengths: Models are offered in 65 mm or 150 mm tube configurations, affecting the maximum flow capacity. For example, FLDC33xx models utilize 65 mm tubes while FLDC35xx models utilize 150 mm tubes.
  • Float Suffixes: The model number suffix indicates float material: G for glass, ST for 316SS, C for carboloy, and SA for red sapphire. Some Carbon Dioxide variants also use an 'S' suffix (e.g., FLDC3503S).
  • Frame Material: While many FLD models offer aluminum or stainless steel frames, the documented Carbon Dioxide series tables list 316 SS Frame Model Nos. exclusively for these specific fluid calibrations.

Where do I reed the ball on the FLDA3214G-NV flow meter. The top or the center?

Asked by: Dgo1
Thank you for your inquiry about the rotameters. The Rule of Thumb is to read the flow rate at the highest and widest part of the float and in this case, a sphere will be the center.

Hi. Can I assume that all FLD series meters are volumetric, or is there an option to order them so that they are standardized?

Asked by: Bria
Thank you for your inquiry. They are calibrated at standard conditions, yet, no options for a calibration certificate.

Ordered an FLDA3420C-NV rotameter. Per spec sheet it has a max flow of 10 L/min. But now see the website says the units are SCFM and the readings on the meter go to 10. Which is the correct measurement unit?

Asked by: Remote Alaska
Thanks for your question? The part number, FLDA3420C-NV, rota-meter with no valve has been confirmed to have a max flow capacity of 10 LPM.
