Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series P1 Brass Flow Switches utilize a piston-type mechanism designed for monitoring flow in piping systems. These switches are calibrated for water at +70°F and feature preset actuation points ranging from 0.10 to 1.5 GPM (0.38 to 5.68 LPM) for liquid flow detection.

While primarily intended for compatible liquids, the series supports air or gas applications with a special piston configuration; however, water-calibrated units are not recommended for air/gas use without factory consultation for special calibration. The switches detect excessive or insufficient flow rates to activate an SPDT reed switch output.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series P1 operates within a process temperature range of -20°F to +300°F (-29°C to +148.9°C) for brass or stainless steel pistons, and -20°F to +225°F (-29°C to 107.2°C) for polysulfone pistons. The standard operating pressure rating is 1000 PSIG (68.9 bar), with a proof pressure of 2500 PSIG and a burst pressure of 5000 PSIG.

Performance specifications include ±10% set point accuracy, ±1% repeatability maximum deviation, and a maximum set point differential hysteresis of 15%. The switches require vertical orientation with lead wires up for calibration consistency, though mounting is permitted in any position. Proper flow direction must be maintained as marked 'IN' and 'OUT' on the housing.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable wetted materials to suit specific media requirements:

  • Housing: Brass or 316 SS (Stainless Steel)
  • Piston: Polysulfone for water; Brass for oil or air
  • O-Ring: Viton® / Fluoroelastomer
  • Spring and Other Wetted Parts: 316 SS and Epoxy

Electrical output is provided via an SPDT reed switch rated at 20 VA. The unit includes No. 18 AWG, 24" (60.96 cm) polymeric lead wires for connection. Process connections are standardized as 1/4" NPT on both inlet and outlet ports.

Selection is based on specific actuation set points available in the model range:

  • P1-011: 0.10 GPM (0.38 LPM)
  • P1-012: 0.25 GPM (0.95 LPM)
  • P1-013: 0.50 GPM (1.89 LPM)
  • P1-014: 0.75 GPM (2.84 LPM)
  • P1-015: 1.00 GPM (3.79 LPM)
  • P1-016: 1.50 GPM (5.68 LPM)

For hazardous area applications, an appropriate explosion-proof enclosure or intrinsically safe interface device is required.

Key Product Differences

The Series P1 distinguishes itself through specific piston material options that dictate temperature limits and media compatibility. The standard configuration features a brass housing with a polysulfone piston for water service, while oil or air applications utilize a brass piston. A 316 SS housing option is available for enhanced corrosion resistance.

Switch ratings vary by voltage: the SPDT switch supports up to .4 Amps AC at 0-30 Volts and .3 Amps DC; at higher voltages, capacity decreases (e.g., .17 A @ 120 VAC). The device is not field-repairable and must be returned to the factory for recalibration or service. Required filtration of 50 microns or better is recommended to prevent debris accumulation.
