Supported Applications

The Omega FDT500 Series comprises advanced-technology water flow meters using transit-time ultrasonic technology. The signal is transmitted and received alternately between two flow sensors, where the 'time of flight' determines the flow rate. Documented applications include commercial and consumable water measurement. Long-term stability and a wide measurement range allow for monitoring water consumption and system leakage.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series is designed for media compatibility with Water. Accuracy is specified as ±2% of reading, or ±5% below minimum transition rate. The pressure rating is 230 psig. Process temperature limits vary by configuration: 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) for the INTEGRAL version and 0 to 90°C (31 to 190°F) for the REMOTE version.

Measurement ranges are defined by flange standard:

  • ANSI Flanges: 2 to 1585 GPM
  • DIN Flanges: 0.12 to 360 m³/h

The series has no moving parts, resulting in minimal system pressure loss and no need for filtration.

Configuration Options

The FDT500 Series is available with an integrally mounted display or a remote-mount version. The transmitter features a 7-segment, 8-digit, single-line LCD that displays flow rate or total at the push of a button.

Process Connections and Sizes

The series supports ANSI 150# flanges in sizes from 2 to 8" (DN 50 to DN 200) and DIN Flange connections ranging from DN 32 to DN 200. Wetted materials include Cast iron.

Power and Output Options

The unit is powered by an internal 3.6V battery (included), with a stated life of 6 to 8 years. Optional output configurations are available via model suffixes:

  • Analog Output (-A): 4 to 20 mA/DC current (requires 8 to 24 Vdc supply)
  • Pulse/Open Collector: 5 to 30 Vdc, 1 mA maximum
  • Communications (-OPT): USB/RS232
  • Pressure Output (-PS): Fluid pressure output option

Housing and Approvals

The housing is constructed of Aluminum alloy with a plastic cover, rated IP68. The series includes CE approval and NIST 3-Point Calibration (included). Additional calibration options include suffixes '-NIST4' for 4-point or '-NIST8' for 8-point NIST calibration.

Key Product Differences

The FDT500 Series is differentiated by flange standard, size, and display configuration. Model numbers follow the pattern FDT50X - [Size] - [Display Type] - [Options].

  • Integral Display: Models such as FDT503 through FDT509 (ANSI) or FDT501-DIN through FDT509-DIN feature the display mounted directly on the transmitter.
  • Remote Display (-R): Suffix '-R' denotes a remote-mount version, such as FDT503-R or FDT504-R. These models support higher process temperatures (up to 90°C) compared to integral versions.
  • Sizing: ANSI sizes range from 2" to 8", while DIN sizes cover DN 32 through DN 200. Dimensions vary by size, with overall length ranging from 260 mm (10.2") for the smallest models up to 350 mm (13.8") for larger configurations.

Can the meter screen be flipped upside down so that we can read it? Our pipe setup for our lab has the direction of flow going from right to left so that when the meter is installed, the screen is upside down and can't easily be read.

Asked by: ADUD
Thank you for your inquiry! Unfortunately, the meter screen is not designed to be flipped in order to change orientation and should not be tampered with in this manner.

How do I change the battery? We have had the unit for almost a year but have never used it. Is there a tab or something to remove before use?

Asked by: Wallace
Thank you for your inquiry. In the manual, Section 6.3, has the information about the battery, battery life, and instructions on how to replace the battery. Here is the web link to obtain the manual https://www.omega.com/en-us/pdf-manuals and click on the E-G and then, scroll down to look for the general part number.

When connected to Vdc does this product still require the battery.

Asked by: NP ENGR
Thanks for your question. Yes. The meter still requires the battery when connected to VDC voltage supply.
