Supported Applications
The FCI Series FS10 is a universal flow monitor and switch specifically designed for gas and liquid process analyzer sampling systems. The series utilizes thermal dispersion measurement technology to provide highly repeatable sensing with no moving parts, making it suitable for general flow and level applications where clogging or dead-legs are concerns.
Documented application contexts include:
- Gas and liquid process analyzer sampling systems
- Cooling water and fluids monitoring
- Lubricant flow assurance
- Ventilation verification
- Chemical injection assurance
- Nitrogen purge verification
- Compressor leakage detection
- In-line or insertion type installations for air, compressed air, and natural gas (FS10i)
Operating Conditions & Performance
The FS10 series operates across a wide range of flow rates depending on the specific model configuration. The standard process temperature is -40 °F to 250 °F [-40 °C to 121 °C]. An optional extended temperature service up to 500 °F [260 °C] is available for remote configurations only, requiring a PTFE jacketed cable. Ambient operating temperatures range from -40 °F to 160 °F [-40 °C to 71 °C].
Performance specifications include:
- Repeatability: ±0.5% of reading.
- Accuracy (Temperature Coefficient): Gas: Maximum ±0.025 % of reading / °F up to 250 °F [±0.05 % of reading / °C up to 121 °C]; Liquid: Maximum ±0.2 % of reading / °F up to 250 °F [±0.367 % of reading / °C up to 121 °C].
- Response Time: 4 sec. (1 time constant) for FS10i.
- Hysteresis: User programmable, ranging from 0-100% of span on the FS10i model.
The series supports various flow ranges based on tube adapters and insertion lengths. For example, air/gas sensitivity ranges include 10 to 2,000 CC/Min (0.02 to 5 SCFH) up to 375 to 100,000 CC/Min (0.80 to 200 SCFH). Liquid flow sensitivities range from 0.70 to 18.00 CC/Min (0.01 to 0.30 GPH) up to 30.00 to 750.00 CC/Min (0.50 to 12.00 GPH).
Pressure ratings vary by connection type: Tube tee and insertion models are rated for 2000 psig [138 barg]; FS10i with Teflon ferrule is rated for 150 psig [10 barg]; SP76 adapter configurations support up to 500 psig [34 barg] maximum.
Configuration Options
The Series FS10 offers extensive configurability across two primary architectures: the integral FS10A (flow element and electronics combined) and the insertion-type FS10i. The series supports both Integral and Remote configurations, allowing separation of the sensor from the electronics for high-temperature or inaccessible locations.
Mounting & Housing
- Integral Mount: Designed to install into standard tube tee fittings (1/4", 3/8", 1/2") or SP76 (NeSSI) modular manifolds. The FS10A features a top-mounted LED array for flow rate and switch trip indication.
- Remote Mount: Available with panel mount adapters (P/N 025719-01) or surface/wall mount brackets (P/N 025442-01). Remote configurations utilize interconnecting cables in lengths of 6', 15', or 30' [2 m, 5 m, or 10 m].
- Insertion Type: The FS10i offers fixed insertion lengths (2" [50 mm]) or variable depth options (up to 6" [152 mm] with compression fittings).
Process Connections & Wetted Materials
- Connections: Includes 1/4" NPT, 1/2" male NPT compression fitting (with Teflon or metal ferrule), and SP76 adapter compatibility. In-line options for FS10i include 1" FNPT and 2" FNPT pipe tees.
- Materials: Wetted parts are constructed from 316L stainless steel with Hastelloy C-22 thermowells or sensor tips. An optional all-Hastelloy C-22 probe assembly is available for corrosive service.
Outputs & Electrical Interface
- Switch Outputs: Relay (SPDT, 1A @ 24 VDC/120 VAC) or Open Collector N-Channel MOSFET (100 mA). The switch output is user-programmable for trip control of hysteresis and time delay.
- Analog Output: 4-20 mA analog output, scalable to flow rate for trend monitoring. This output may also be assigned to temperature in some configurations.
- Digital Communication: RS232C Serial I/O is standard on all models, allowing user setup via push-buttons or serial interface.
- Cable Options: M12 connectors (male/female) are available with fixed cable glands, customer-supplied cables, or supplied mating cables in various lengths. Jackets include Polyurethane for service up to 176 °F [80 °C] and PTFE for extended temperature service.
Approvals & Safety
- Hazardous Locations: FM, FMC (CSA) approved for Class I, II, III Division 2; ATEX/IECEx certified for Zone 2 and Zone 22. Remote flow elements are available with approvals for Class I Division 1 / Zone 1.
- Safety Integrity: SIL 2 compliant with a Safe Failure Fraction (SFF) of 90%.
- Ingress Protection: IP65, IP66, IP67 in non-hazardous locations; NEMA 4X for FM/FMC approved units. ATEX/IECEx approvals typically carry an IP64 rating.
Key Product Differences
The Series FS10 is divided into distinct model families with specific installation and performance characteristics:
- FS10A (Integral): Combines the flow element and electronics in a single unit. It installs directly into tube tees or SP76 manifolds using a 1/4" NPT connection. This model is optimized for analyzer sampling systems where space is limited.
- FS10i (Insertion): Designed as an insertion-type instrument with fixed or variable stem lengths. It features process connections such as 1/2" male NPT compression fittings and supports in-line pipe tee installations (1" or 2"). The FS10i is specifically calibrated for air, compressed air, and natural gas applications.
- Remote Configuration: Available across the series to separate the sensor from the electronics. This variation allows installation of the flow element in high-temperature zones while mounting the display and controls in accessible areas. Remote versions require specific interconnecting cables (Block 4 codes) with PTFE jackets for temperatures up to 500 °F [260 °C].
- Material Options: Standard models use 316L stainless steel bodies with Hastelloy C-22 sensor tips. Variants exist where the entire probe assembly is constructed from all-Hastelloy C-22 for enhanced chemical compatibility.
