Supported Applications
The Omega FL-86 Series consists of all-plastic variable area flow meters designed for vertical in-line installation with the inlet at the bottom and outlet at the top. These units are engineered to measure water flow rates ranging from 0.1 to 1 GPM up to 10 to 100 GPM, utilizing a chemical- and break-resistant metering tube.
Applications include systems requiring resistance to corrosive fluids where metal components are unsuitable. The series supports media compatibility with water using PTFE floats and offers optional Perfluoroelastomer O-rings for enhanced chemical resistance. Users must ensure fluid compatibility, as the meters are not oxygen cleaned; incompatible fluids may cause O-ring swelling or failure.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The FL-86 Series delivers an accuracy of ±6% full scale and repeatability of ±1%. Measurement ranges span from 0.1 to 1 GPM water through 10 to 100 GPM water, depending on the specific model selected.
Operating limits are defined by a pressure/temperature curve for meters with plastic fittings: at 20°F, the maximum non-shock pressure is 150 psig; this decreases as temperature rises, reaching 10 psig at 160°F. The series includes models configured for specific ranges such as 0.2 to 2.4 GPM water and 6 to 60 GPM water.
Caution is required regarding environmental exposure: Polysulfone components should not be used in direct sunlight or significant sources of ultraviolet light, which can degrade the material integrity.
Configuration Options
- Housing and Wetted Materials: The metering tube and guide rod are constructed from Polysulfone. Fittings utilize PVDF, while floats are made of PTFE. Standard O-rings are FKM, with Perfluoroelastomer available as an option.
- Process Connections: Models feature union ends for simplified installation and maintenance in vertical piping systems. Connection sizes include 1/2 FNPT, 3/4 FNPT, 1 FNPT, and 2 FNPT depending on the flow range model.
- Dimensions: Overall length (Dimension A) varies by size: 254 mm (10 in), 305 mm (12 in), or 406 mm (16 in). Dimension B ranges from 35 mm (1.4 in) to 98 mm (3.9 in).
- Calibration: NIST calibration is available as an option, with certificates for 5-point (-NIST 5PT) or 10-point (-NIST 10PT) verification.
Key Product Differences
The series comprises seven distinct models (FL-86A through FL-86J), differentiated by flow range, connection size, and physical dimensions. The selection logic is driven by the required GPM water capacity:
- Low Flow Models: FL-86A covers 0.1 to 1 GPM with a 1/2 FNPT connection; FL-86B (0.2 to 2.4 GPM) and FL-86C (0.5 to 5 GPM) utilize 3/4 FNPT connections.
- Mid Flow Models: FL-86D (1 to 10 GPM) and FL-86E (2 to 20 GPM) are equipped with 1 FNPT connections and a length of 305 mm (12 in).
- High Flow Models: FL-86H (6 to 60 GPM) and FL-86J (10 to 100 GPM) require 2 FNPT connections and measure 406 mm (16 in) in length.
All models feature a see-through, detachable direct-reading scale calibrated for water flow. The series is backed by a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship when installed per manufacturer instructions.
