Air, Gases, Caustic & Degreasing Solution Circulation Heater
- Standard Element Sheath Materials
- Incoloy® 800 — A Nickel (30 to 35%), Chromium (19 to 23%), Iron alloy. The high nickel content of this alloy contributes to its resistance to scaling and corrosion. Used in air heating (also see Incoloy® 840) and immersion heating of potable water and other liquids that are not corrosive to an Incoloy® 800 sheath.
- Low Carbon Steel — Applications include fluid heat transfer media, tar, high to low viscosity petroleum oils, asphalt, wax, molten salt, and other solutions not corrosive to a steel sheath.
- 316 Stainless Steel — A Chromium (16 to 18%), Nickel (11 to 14%), Iron Alloy with Molybdenum (2 to 3%) added to improve corrosion resistance in certain environments, especially those that would tend to cause pitting due to the presence of chlorides. Applications include deionized water.

Supported Applications
The Omega CHF5 series comprises self-contained circulation heaters designed for optimum operating efficiency and performance. These units transfer heat generated by elements immediately to the medium being processed with minimal losses. Documented applications include:
- Air heating, forced air & gases, caustic solutions, and degreasing solutions
- Immersion heating of potable water and other liquids not corrosive to an Incoloy® 800 sheath
- Fluid heat transfer media including tar, high to low viscosity petroleum oils (such as Fuel Oils Bunker C and Number 6), asphalt, wax, molten salt, and other solutions not corrosive to a steel sheath
- Deionized water
- Clean water for washrooms, showers, rinse tanks, and freeze protection of storage tanks
- Food industry applications, sterilizing solutions, and many organic and inorganic chemicals
Operating Conditions & Performance
The CHF5 series operates with a process temperature up to 399°C (750°F). The heating element sheath diameter is specified as 8 or 12 mm (0.315 or 0.475") on smaller circulation units with screw plug heaters, and 12 mm (0.475") on larger units with flanged heaters.
Power density varies by application type:
- 8 watts/in² (1.3 watts/cm²) for typical applications such as Fuel Oils (Bunker C and Number 6)
- 23 watts/in² (3.6 watts/cm²) for forced air & gases, caustic solutions, and degreasing solutions
Inlet-outlet connections are NPT pipe threads for units sized from 76 to 203 mm (3 to 8") circulation heaters; flanges are optional. Standard inlet-outlet connections on 254 mm (10") and larger units are 150 lb rated flanges.
Configuration Options
The series supports a wide selection of heating element sheath materials for maximum corrosion resistance to the medium being processed. Wetted materials include SA53B or SA106B steel, with stainless steel available as an option. The outer jacket is standard stainless steel sheet metal protecting insulation from the environment; optional configurations include a stainless steel outer jacket with a weather-tight seal.
Terminal housing options include:
- General purpose (NEMA 1) terminal housing (standard)
- Moisture proof (NEMA 4) and/or explosion resistant (NEMA 7) housings
- Moisture/Explosion Resistant (NEMA 4/7)
Additional configurable options include:
- Double-pole non-indicating bulb and capillary type thermostat
- Solid state temperature controllers and jacket thermostats
- Thermocouple for over-temperature protection (requires separate conduit to control panel)
- Optional stainless steel flanges or 300 lb ratings
- Optional stainless steel vessel
- Additional insulation or high temperature ceramic fiber insulation

Flange heater elements are wired into branch circuits having a maximum current of 48 Amps. The number of circuits is listed next to the heater's voltage and phase in selection tables.

The CHF5 series offers units across multiple nominal pipe sizes, ranging from 1¼ NPT up to 6"—150 lb flanges. Model numbers correspond to specific combinations of Nominal Pipe Size, voltage (120V, 240V-1Ph/3Ph, 480V-1Ph/3Ph), and power rating in KW.
Smaller units utilize screw plug heaters with element diameters of 8 or 12 mm (0.315 or 0.475"). Larger units employ flanged heaters with a standard element diameter of 12 mm (0.475"). Standard inlet-outlet connections on 254 mm (10") and larger units are 150 lb rated flanges, while smaller sizes use NPT pipe threads.
Approximate weights vary by size and power rating; for example, a 1¼ NPT unit ranges from 6 to 8 kg depending on configuration, whereas a 6"—150 lb unit can weigh up to 257 lbs (117 kg).
