Supported Applications
The Omega OM-USB-TC Series comprises USB 2.0 full-speed data acquisition modules designed for thermocouple and analog voltage input measurements in Microsoft® Windows® environments. The series includes the OM-USB-TC, which provides eight differential thermocouple inputs; the OM-USB-TC-AI, configured with four differential thermocouple inputs and four differential or single-ended voltage inputs; and the OM-USB-5201, an 8-channel thermocouple module featuring integrated data logging via CompactFlash. These standalone, plug-and-play modules support Type J, K, R, S, T, N, E, and B thermocouples.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) with a humidity rating of 0 to 90% RH non-condensing. Storage conditions are specified as -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F). The modules feature 24-bit resolution and require a warm-up time of 30 minutes maximum for optimal performance.
Measurement ranges vary by thermocouple type:
- Type J: -210 to 1200°C (-346 to 2192°F)
- Type K: -210 to 1372°C (-346 to 2502°F)
- Type T: -200 to 400°C (-328 to 752°F)
- Type E: -200 to 1000°C (-328 to 1832°F)
- Type R and S: -50 to 1768°C (-58 to 3214°F)
- Type B: 250 to 1820°C (482 to 3308°F)
- Type N: -200 to 1300°C (-328 to 2372°F)
The OM-USB-TC-AI model supports analog voltage inputs with ranges of ±10V, ±5V, ±2.5V, and ±1.25V.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable input types, data logging options, and digital I/O capabilities across its models:
- Sensor Inputs: Supports 8 differential thermocouple channels (OM-USB-TC, OM-USB-5201) or a mix of 4 thermocouple and 4 voltage inputs (OM-USB-TC-AI).
- Digital I/O: All models include eight independent, TTL-compatible digital input/output channels that are software programmable.
- Data Logging: The OM-USB-5201 includes a 512 MB CompactFlash card for standalone logging at intervals from 1 second up to 2^32 seconds. Data logging requires the module to be disconnected from the computer and powered by an external AC adapter.
- Counter Input: The OM-USB-TC-AI includes a single event counter with TTL, rising edge triggered input (up to 1 MHz frequency).
- Cold Junction Compensation: Integrated CJC sensors provide accuracy of ±0.25°C typical and ±0.5°C max at 15 to 35°C.
The modules feature screw terminal blocks accepting 16 to 30 AWG wire, with input isolation rated at a minimum of 500 Vdc between field wiring and the USB interface.
Key Product Differences
Differences among series members are defined by channel configuration and data logging capability:
- OM-USB-TC: An 8-channel thermocouple input module powered solely via the USB port.
- OM-USB-TC-AI: A hybrid model with four thermocouple inputs and four analog voltage inputs. It also includes a counter output feature not present in other models.
- OM-USB-5201: An 8-channel thermocouple module equipped for data logging via CompactFlash, requiring an external AC adapter (included) when operating independently of the USB host power.
The OM-USB-TC and OM-USB-TC-AI weigh 182 g (6.4 oz), while the OM-USB-5201 weighs 227 g (8.0 oz). All models utilize a plastic housing with dimensions of 127 L x 89 W x 36 mm H (5.0 x 3.5 x 1.4").

Great Device
Amazing instruments.
We leverage the TC and digital channels of three of these devices to characterize the thermal performance and safety-thermostat-trip points in our line of clothes dryers. We would not be able to offer our customers safe and efficient machines without this vital data!
Heed the warning...ground your UUT and use a grounding strap any wine you work with the TC’s or UUT. The A/D inputs are easily damaged!...not a criticism... just a fact!

Does Omega expose the software calls so that one could use their own software to communicate with the USB Data Acquisition Modules?
Hello Steve
I'm sorry we do not, though most of our data acquisition devices such as this unit can run on different software programs such as LabView as DasyLab
