Supported Applications

The Omega Model K-79 Series Pocket Thermometer is a mechanical, non-electronic instrument designed for spot-checking temperatures in fluids, gases, and semi-solids. The series supports applications including air conditioning, food processing, refrigeration, cookers, frozen foods, chemicals, radiators, meats, fish, fruit, incubators, milk and dairy products, dishwashers, soil, compost, and water.

The pointed stainless steel probe is configured for penetrating semi-solid materials such as fruits, meats, frozen foods, soils, fish, and other similar media. The rugged construction with a plastic crystal head ensures durability in these environments without the use of mercury or glass.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The K-79 series utilizes a precision-sensitive bi-metal helix coil to drive the pointer on a 1" diameter dial. Accuracy is specified as 1% of scale across all ranges. The approximate response time in water is 4 seconds for one time constant, defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of an instantaneous temperature change.

Available measurement ranges include:

• -40 to 160°F (Model K-79-2)
• 0 to 220°F (Model K-79-3)
• 25 to 125°F (Model K-79-4)
• 50 to 550°F (Model K-79-5)
• -10 to 110°C (Model K-79-7)
• 0 to 150°C (Model K-79-8)

The probe features a .142" O.D. stem that is 5" long with a pointed tip. The unit weighs 0.65 ounces (18.5 g) and includes an external reset adjustment for simple zero reset in seconds.

Installation Guidelines

To ensure accurate readings, the stem must be inserted at least 2 inches into fluids and 4 inches into gases. When inserting into semi-solid materials, hold the stem firmly and insert slowly to avoid bending; do not hold the head during insertion.

The series is offered with a plastic pocket case that includes a clip and holder loop for secure storage and transport. The construction combines stainless steel wetted parts with a plastic crystal dial face, providing shock resistance and eliminating breakage risks associated with glass or mercury.

The K-79 series is distinguished by its specific model numbers corresponding to fixed temperature ranges. The primary variation across the line is the scale range selected for the application:

• K-79-2, K-79-3, K-79-4, and K-79-5 provide Fahrenheit scales ranging from -40°F to 550°F.
• K-79-7 and K-79-8 provide Celsius scales ranging from -10°C to 150°C.

All models share the same physical dimensions, accuracy class of 1% of scale, and mechanical bi-metal operation. The series does not include electrical outputs or electronic components; it is a purely mechanical dial thermometer designed for portable spot-checking tasks.
