Supported Applications
The Omega CNI8D Series comprises 1/8 DIN horizontal and vertical dual display PID controllers designed for temperature, process, and strain control applications. These single-loop autotune controllers are engineered for industrial automation environments requiring precise regulation of thermocouple (TC), resistance temperature detector (RTD), analog voltage/current inputs, or strain measurements.
Documented application contexts include:
- Temperature Control: Monitoring and regulating processes using TC (ITS90) types J, K, T, E, R, S, B, C, N, L and RTD (ITS88) sensors.
- Process Variable Regulation: Managing analog voltage signals ranging from 0 to 100 mV, 0 to 1 V, or 0 to 10 Vdc, as well as current loops of 0 to 20 mA (4 to 20 mA).
- Strain Measurement: Specific models support strain inputs with resolutions down to 1 μV.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The CNI8D Series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 55°C (32 to 131°F) and supports storage temperatures from 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F). Humidity tolerance is rated at 90% RH non-condensing. The controllers feature a response time of 0.7 sec for 99.9% settling.
Performance specifications vary by input type:
- Accuracy (Temperature): ±0.5°C temp; ±0.03% rdg typical.
- Resolution: 1°/0.1° for temperature inputs and 10 μV process resolution (with specific strain models offering 10/1 μV).
- Stability: Temperature stability is documented as 0.04°C/°C RTD, 0.5°C/°C TC @ 25°C (77°F), and 50 ppm/°C for process inputs.
The series includes a programmable digital filter to manage signal noise in demanding environments.
Power Supply Options
- Standard Line Voltage: 90 to 240 Vac ±10%, 50 to 400 Hz, or 110-375 Vdc (power consumption: 4W for single display; 5W for dual display).
- Low Voltage Option: 20 to 36 Vdc or 24 Vac available via the "-DC" suffix.
Configuration Options
The CNI8D Series offers extensive configurability across housing orientation, output types, communication protocols, and display features. The controllers are designed for panel mounting with a front-removable design to facilitate maintenance without disconnecting rear wiring.
Housing & Dimensions
- Horizontal (CNi8DH): 48 H x 96 W x 127 mm D (1.89 x 3.78 x 5").
- Vertical (CNi8DV): 48 H x 48 W x 127 mm D (1.89 x 1.89 x 5").
- Strain Models: Specific dimensions of 25.4 H x 48 W x 127 mm D (1.0 x 1.89 x 5") are available for strain applications.
- Enclosure Ratings: NEMA 4X/Type 4 (IP65) front bezel or NEMA 1/Type 1 front bezel options depending on configuration.
Outputs & Alarms
The series supports two independent control or alarm outputs. Available output types include:- Mechanical Relay: Form "C" SPDT relays rated at 250 Vac @ 3 A Resistive Load.
- Solid State Relays (SSR): DC pulse or 0.5 A SSR options.
- Analog Output: Configurable for 0 to 10 Vdc or 0 to 20 mA current output.
- Pulse Output: Pulsed 10 Vdc output available.
Communication & Connectivity
The controllers support embedded Ethernet connectivity (optional) with an embedded Web server. Additional communication options include:- Isolated RS232 and RS485/422 (300 to 19.2 Kb).
- Ethernet combined with isolated RS485/422 hub for up to 31 devices.
Display Features
The dual display utilizes a programmable color-changing feature (green, amber, red) and includes a digital filter. The unit features plug/removable connectors with sturdy panel mounting sleeves and adjustable thumb nuts.Key Product Differences
The CNI8D Series is differentiated by specific model suffixes that define functional capabilities:
- -AL (Limit Alarm): Provides alarms only without PID control. Note: Analog output is not available with "-AL" units.
- -SM (Simplified Menu): Offers on/off control or alarms, excluding full PID functionality. This option is not available on CNiS strain models.
- -EIT: Adds Ethernet connectivity with an embedded Web server.
- -C24: Provides isolated RS232 and RS485/422 communication (not compatible with excitation).
- -C4EIT: Combines Ethernet with an embedded Web server plus an isolated RS485/422 hub.
- -DC: Enables 20 to 36 Vdc or 24 Vac power supply (not compatible with excitation).
The series also supports factory setup and configuration (-FS) options. Excitation voltages of 5 V, 10 V, or 24 V are available for specific sensor types, subject to compatibility constraints noted in the ordering guide.

Can you tell me what terminals/jumpers to use if I have a 2 or 3 wire RTD on a CNI8DH33? The online manual doesn't describe this but does show the 4 lead connection.
Thank you for your inquiry. For wiring questions please e-mail us at temp@omega.com.
