Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 4B is a microprocessor-based temperature and process controller designed for mounting in enclosed panels. It provides advanced control features including PID, ON/OFF, manual, and programmable Ramp/Soak (64 steps) modes. The series supports universal inputs compatible with thermocouples (Types K, J, T, E, N, R, S, B, L, U, TXK), Platinum Resistance Detectors (Pt100, JPt100), and analog signals including DC voltages (0-5V, 0-10V) and currents (4-20mA, 0-20mA).

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 4B operates within an ambient temperature range of 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C). Measurement accuracy is specified as ±0.25% span, ±1 least significant digit across the supported input ranges. The front panel carries an IP56 rating for protection against dust and water jets.

Input measurement ranges vary by sensor type:

• Thermocouples: Ranges include -328 to 2372°F (-200 to 1300°C) for Type K, -148 to 2192°F (-100 to 1200°C) for Type J, and up to 3272°F (1800°C) for Type B.
• RTDs: Pt100 supports -328 to 1562°F (-200 to 850°C); JPt100 supports -4 to 752°F (-20 to 400°C).
• Analog Inputs: Voltage and current inputs display a range of -999 to 9999.

The controller features dual 4-digit, 7-segment LED displays: red for Process Value (PV) and green for Set Value (SV). Power consumption is maximum 5 VA. The unit includes nonvolatile memory backup.

Configuration Options

The Series 4B offers configurable dual outputs to drive heating, cooling, or alarm circuits. Available output types include:

• Relay Output: SPDT configuration rated at 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive.
• Voltage Pulse Output: 14 VDC with a maximum current of 40 mA.
• Current Output: 4-20 mA (requires load resistance less than 600 Ω).
• Linear Voltage Output: 0-10 V.

The series supports RS-485 communication using the Modbus ASCII/RTU protocol. Power supply options include standard AC 100-240V, 50/60 Hz or optional low-voltage DC 24V (indicated by "LV" in model codes). Accessories available for specific configurations include a 250 Ω precision resistor (A-277) required for certain current inputs, an R/C snubber (A-600), weatherproof enclosures (A-900, A-901), and configuration software.

Key Product Differences

The Series 4B is part of a broader family that includes the 8B, 16B, and 32B models. While all share similar control logic and input capabilities, they differ in physical dimensions and relay ratings:

• Series 4B (1/4 DIN): Features a panel cutout of approximately 44.8 mm × 22.0 mm. The relay output is SPDT rated at 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive.
• Series 32B: Relay outputs are typically SPST rated at 3 A @ 250 VAC resistive, with a larger panel footprint (91.0 mm × 91.0 mm cutout).

The Series 4B model number structure follows the format: Series Code - Output 1 - Output 2 - Options. For example, "4B-53" denotes a voltage pulse output (code 5) and relay output (code 3), while "4B-63-LV" indicates linear voltage output, relay output, and low-voltage power supply.
