Supported Applications

The Omega CN7200, CN7500, CN7600, and CN7800 series are Ramp/Soak temperature and process controllers designed for monitoring and controlling industrial processes. These units support universal inputs including thermocouples (Types K, J, T, E, N, R, S, B, L, U), Pt100 RTD sensors, DC voltage signals (0 to 50 mV, 0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V), and DC current loops (0 to 20 mA*, 4 to 20 mA*). The series is engineered for applications requiring precise temperature regulation via ON/OFF or PID control methods with autotune capabilities.

Key functional features include support for up to 64 ramp/soak actions and the ability to manage dual-loop outputs. Configurations allow simultaneous heating and cooling, while specific models offer additional alarm functions selectable from 13 built-in types. RS485 communications enable integration into larger control networks.

Operating Conditions & Performance

All series members operate within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) and are powered by a universal supply of 100 to 240 Vac, 50/60 Hz. Measurement accuracy is specified as ±0.25% span, ±1 least significant digit across the supported input types.

Input ranges vary by sensor type:

  • Thermocouples: Ranges include -200 to 1300°C (-328 to 2372°F) for Type K, N; -100 to 1200°C (-148 to 2192°F) for Type J; and up to 100 to 1800°C (212 to 3272°F) for Type B.
  • RTD: Pt100 sensors support -200 to 600°C (-328 to 1112°F).
  • Analog Signals: DC voltage and current inputs cover a display range of -999 to 9999.

The CN7500 and CN7800 series feature selectable resolution, with standard resolutions of 1.0 or 0.1 for thermocouples (except Types R, S, and B). The CN7600 and CN7200 models carry an IP66 enclosure rating.

Configuration Options

The series offers distinct form factors to accommodate different panel mounting requirements:

  • CN7500 Series (1/32 DIN): Compact dimensions of 45 x 22.5 mm (1.772 x 0.886"). Weight: 114 g (4 oz).
  • CN7800 Series (1/16 DIN): Front bezel 48 mm² (1.89 in²) with a panel cut-out of 45 mm² (1.77 in²). Weight: 114 g (4 oz).
  • CN7200 Series (¼ DIN): Square bezel dimensions of 96 x 96 x 15.8 mm (3.78 x 3.78 x 0.625"). Weight: 425 g (15 oz).
  • CN7600 Series: Rectangular dimensions of 92 x 46 mm (3.60 x 1.8"). Weight: 425 g (15 oz).

Dual control outputs are standard across the series, with configurations including DC pulse/relay, relay/relay, current output/relay, and linear voltage/relay.

  • Relay Outputs: SPST or SPDT contacts rated at 5 A @ 250 Vac resistive (control) or 3 A @ 250 Vac resistive (alarm).
  • Voltage Pulse Output: 14 V, 10 to -20% (max 40 mA).
  • Current Output: 4 to 20 mA.
  • Linear Voltage Output: 0 to 5 V or 0 to 10 Vdc.

RS485 MODBUS® communication is standard, supporting up to 247 addresses with transmission speeds from 2400 to 38,400 bps. The second output can be reconfigured as an alarm on select models, and the CN7600 supports up to three additional alarm outputs.

Key Product Differences

The series is differentiated primarily by physical size (DIN footprint) and specific output configurations:

  • CN7500 & CN7800 Series: Designed for compact installations. The CN7800 includes 2 alarms standard, while the CN7500 features dual-loop control with a second output configurable as an alarm.
  • CN7600 Series: Offers versatility with up to three additional alarm outputs and IP66 protection in a rectangular housing. Models include options for DC pulse/relay (CN7623), relay/relay (CN7633), 4-20 mA/relay (CN7653), or linear voltage/relay (CN7663).
  • CN7200 Series: A square ¼ DIN format with IP66 rating. Available in DC pulse/relay (CN7223), relay/relay (CN7233), current/relay (CN7253), and linear voltage/relay (CN7263) configurations.

All models require an external 250 Ω precision shunt resistor (OMX-R250, sold separately) for specific input types. Field-installable accessories include the CNQUENCHARC noise suppression RC snubber and the CN7-485-USB-1 RS485 to USB mini-node converter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could be a much more user-friendly instrument Although the CN7233 temperature controller that I purchased works, I cannot in good conscience award it any more than a 2 out of 5 stars due to inadequate documentation, bizarre display hieroglyphics, and some questionable logic affecting the user interface. The application is controlling a single-zone pottery kiln - about as simple as it gets. The feature that attracted my attention to the CN7233 is that it can have as many as 8 separate programs (patterns?) in memory with as many as 8 steps in each program (pattern). The documentation in both the Instruction Sheet included with the instrument and the Specifications - Installation and Operating Instructions available on-line fall short in presenting a concise, cogent set of instructions on how to set up, tune, and operate the controller. One item that is missing in the documentation is any detailed description on how to tune the instrument - no examples or other guidance to address this important feature, particularly for the ramp/soak function. The only substantive direction comes from the bold-face warning on page 11 of bulletin E-90-OCN which states: "Do not operate auto-tuning while a ramp function is operating. The ramp function will prevent self tune from operating properly. Make sure that all tuning is set up before operating ramp/soak". And then there is the word "off" found in Link parameter on page 12. What I discovered the hard way is that "Off" really means "On" unless there is an unused step at the end of a pattern. Where is the absolute "end" function? And "SP" doesn't mean set point, but rather where the decimal point goes. The display, IMO, is simply weird. A type K thermocouple is depicted as a reversed lower case "y". "r-S" is where one goes to find the "run" button as well as the "stop" button. The stop button is somewhat important because that is how one selects the program (pattern) to be used for the operation. Is that logical? The CN7233 could be a much better value if both the instructions and the user interface were cleaned up.

The only negative aspect I would like to see corrected at some point in the future is the input buttons--they are not very tactile and difficult to use accurately without some sort of stylus.

Interface is not immediately straightforward, but manual does good job of breaking all the functions down in a clear way. Technical support was helpful in determining the the PID controller that best suited my application needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for general lab use Fills my light/medium-duty heating and cooling needs. I use it to control metallurgy furnaces, PVD process heaters, hydrogen furnaces and a coolant bath for electrochemistry synthesis. It takes some time to acclimate to the old shcool user-interface, but it's not a deal-breaker. The auto-tune feature helps to keep the process temperature within one degree C when implemented properly.

On the free software can I program the Ramp/Soak that I would like on the computer or does that have to be done directly on the controller itself

For product CN7653, Dual output, 4 to 20 mA/relay with RS485* means that the PID can control temperature by adjusting a current (4 A to 20 mA)?

Hi, thanks for your question. Yes, output #1 is an analog control output that can be programmed using the PID tuning parameters to control your process. You can either manually tune the PID values, or use autotune, providing the process is for temperature and you have a set point at least 100 degrees (C or F) above your starting ambient temperature. Hi, I am trying to run the CN7-A software with my Omega 7800 and my computer is recognizing it as a device and will not read it as a com port, clicking on the device states that there are no available drivers. please help
