Supported Applications

The Omega CND3 Series comprises temperature and process PID controllers designed for monitoring temperatures in various environments. As an open-type unit, the series is intended for integration into control systems where operators require a high-resolution LCD display to monitor Process Value (PV) and Set Point (SV). The controller supports applications requiring precise regulation via multiple sensor types including thermocouples, platinum RTDs, resistance sensors, and analog inputs.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The CND3 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0°C ~ +50°C with a relative humidity rating of 35% ~ 80% RH (non-condensing). Storage conditions are specified as -20°C ~ +65°C. The unit features a sampling rate of 0.1 sec/per scan for analog inputs, thermocouples, and platinum RTDs. Display accuracy is selectable to show either an integer value or one digit to the right of the decimal point.

Electrical specifications include power consumption up to 8VA max. The controller withstands vibration resistance of 10 to 55Hz at 10m/s² for 10 minutes in X, Y, and Z directions, and shock resistance of Max. 300m/s² (3 times in each 3 axes, 6 directions). Maximum operating altitude is listed as 2000m.

Configuration Options

The series offers a configurable envelope across panel sizes, input types, control modes, and output configurations. Selection logic follows the model number guide: CN <1> <2> D3-<3>-<4>-<5>-<6>-<7>-<8>.

Panel Sizes

  • Code 20: 48x48 mm (1/16 DIN)
  • Code 30: 72x72 mm
  • Code 40: 48x96 mm (1/8 DIN)
  • Code 60: 96x96 mm (1/4 DIN)

Sensor Inputs & Measurement Ranges

The controller accepts the following input types with selectable temperature units of °C or °F:

  • Thermocouple: K, J, T, E, N, R, S, B, L, U, TXK
  • 3-wire Platinum RTD: Pt100, JPt100
  • Resistance: Cu50, Ni120
  • Analog Input: 0 ~ 5Vdc, 0 ~ 10Vdc, 0 ~ 20mA, 4 ~ 20mA, 0 ~ 50mVdc

Control Modes & Outputs

Available control modes include PID, PID program control (Ramp/Soak), FUZZY, Self-tuning, Manual, and On/OFF. The series supports up to two output groups with the following signal types:

  • Relay Output: 250Vac, 5A resistive load
  • Voltage Pulse Output: 12Vdc -10%~+20%, Max. output current 40mA
  • DC Current Output: 4 ~ 20mA (Load resistance: Max. 500Ω)
  • Linear Voltage Output: 0 ~ 10Vdc

Optional features include Event Inputs and CT measure inputs for current measurement using external transformers compliant with IEC-61010-2-032.

Power Supply & Connections

  • Voltage: 80 ~ 260Vac 50/60Hz; 24Vac 50/60Hz ±10%; 24 Vdc ±10%
  • Terminals: Recommended solder-less terminals (M3 screw, width 5.8 mm)

Key Product Differences

Variants within the CND3 Series are distinguished by panel dimensions and output configurations encoded in the model number. The first digit following "CN" indicates the DIN size (e.g., CN04 for 1/8 DIN, CN16 for 1/4 DIN). Subsequent codes define the primary control output type (Relay 'R', Voltage Pulse 'V', Current 'C', Linear Voltage 'L') and secondary alarm or auxiliary outputs. Power supply options are designated by code A (80 ~ 260Vac) or D (24Vac/Vdc), with specific model restrictions noted for the DT330 72x72 variant regarding DC support.

The series includes configurations supporting dual output groups, allowing independent selection of control and alarm functions. Optional communication capabilities include RS-485 interfaces and event input channels configured via optional codes in positions 6 through 8 of the model string.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Outstanding controller, abysmal manual. This would be a 5+ star product if it weren't for the extraordinarily poor manual. This is a complex controller with a tremendous number of features and settings that can handle very difficult process control problems easily...once you figure out how to use it. Technical support, while very well meaning and committed to helping, was of not much assistance as they also relied on the same manual, and generally suggested "reading the manual" as a way out. I wouldn't have called if I hadn't read the manual. I will admit, that I am old, but I have been using Omega controllers for decades with few problems. The descriptions in the manual for this excellent controller were abysmal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DONT DO THSI TO YOURSELF! Extremely hard to program. You don't want to be spending hours just trying to program a simple step heating process and it still not working. Instructions aren't the best. There is no sense of hierarchy in the instruction steps nor a clear description of what each term means.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON'T The unit was so hard to program that even with Omega engineers helping/instructing me over the phone I could not get it to work. After 4 calls and about 8 hours on the phone I gave up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Capable, Simple, Affordable Controller Handy little controller that has worked flawlessly so far. Installed to replace the failing electronics in a drying oven and found it easy to adapt to relatively low temperature use with the appropriate limits and alarms. Has brought control temperatures (using the same sensor) within 2C of the setpoint compared to 10C with the older electronics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Reliable I could not locate the OEM controller, so I called Dwyer/Omega after speaking with their product specialest they were able to quickly come up with the controller that turns out to work better then the OEM one that it replaced, also giving me a feature which was an issue with the OEM controller which was to lock out the controler at different levels, enabling the user to only access what is needed, so for me, this controller was the way to go, Thank you Dwyer/ Omega

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CND3 Temperature Controller Great features for the price, especially the Auto-Tune feature. The manual it comes with is not very helpful so don't expect it to teach you how to set up a Temperature Controller. The online manuals are slightly better. Once you wrap you head around the programming aspect it's a great controller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Controller Great controller but Tech Support thru "Contact Support" on website had little knowledge of how to help with controller functions. Some trial and error, and too much manual reading to make it do what I wanted.
