Supported Applications
The Omega MCJ Series Miniature Electronic Ice Point is a cold junction compensator designed to convert thermocouple voltages into 0°C referenced signals. It provides the electrical equivalent of an ice bath reference at 32°F (0°C) for use with digital multimeters (DMMs), voltage recorders, and other electronic devices that require temperature measurement via thermocouples.
The device is also utilized as a precision millivolt source to calibrate thermocouple meters. It supports nine standard thermocouple calibrations: J, K, T, E, R, S, G, C, and D.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The MCJ Series operates within an ambient temperature range of 10 to 45°C. Accuracy specifications are defined by the operating environment:
- Accuracy: 0.5°C from 15 to 30°C; 1°C from 10 to 45°C.
The unit features a reference temperature setting of 0°C (32°F) and maintains high stability, performing better than ±0.2°C at any stabilized temperature over the full 10 to 50°C range for related series configurations. The output impedance is less than 250 Ω standard.
For storage without a battery, the device tolerates temperatures from -25 to 75°C (-13 to 167°F). The compact physical dimensions are 75 H x 25 W x 13 mm D (2.94 x 1 x 0.5"), with a weight of 57 g (< 2 oz).

The MCJ Series is available in specific thermocouple calibration types, each identified by a distinct color code for quick identification:

- K (Chromega®/Alomega®): Yellow
- T (Copper/Constantan): Blue
- E (Chromega®/Constantan): Violet
- R and S: Green
- C* (W-5% Re/W-26% Re):** Red

The device connects via a standard thermocouple connector or jack and includes female-to-male adaptor pins. It is battery-powered, with replacement batteries available as the MCJ-BATT-B accessory.

Key Product Differences
The primary variation within the series is determined by the thermocouple calibration type (J, K, T, E, R/S, C, D), which dictates the internal compensation logic and color coding. The MCJ Series differs from the related CJ Series in that the MCJ is a miniature electronic ice point specifically designed for portability with dimensions of 75 H x 25 W x 13 mm D.
While the standard reference temperature setting is 0°C (32°F), notes indicate that CJs are available with reference junction temperatures other than 0°C, up to a maximum of 212°F, for an additional cost. The MCJ Series model numbers follow the format MCJ-, such as MCJ-J or MCJ-K.
The device is intended for use with instrumentation having an impedance of 50K ohms or greater to ensure accurate readings.
