Supported Applications

The Series IEFB is a field-adjustable insertion thermal energy meter that uses electromagnetic technology to measure fluid velocity and energy consumption. It integrates a flow sensor, temperature measurement, and an energy calculator into a single unit, making it well suited to chiller, boiler, and heating and cooling applications where both flow and thermal energy must be accounted for.

Because it is an insertion-style meter, it installs into a tapped pipe rather than requiring an in-line spool piece. The high-accuracy IEFB is adjustable to fit pipe sizes from 4 to 10” (100 to 250 mm), while the standard-accuracy IEFB fits pipe sizes from 4 to 36” (100 to 900 mm), so a single family covers a broad range of building and process piping. The meter is compatible with clean or dirty, non-coating, conductive liquids. Only qualified professionals with the necessary trade skills should install, remove, or service the product, and the system must be properly vented before service because it is intended for pressurized pipe applications.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The meter measures velocity over 0 to 20 ft/s (0 to 6 m/s). Accuracy is ±0.5% of reading at the calibrated velocity and ±1% of reading from 2 to 20 ft/s (0.6 to 6 m/s), with a floor of ±0.02 ft/s (±0.006 m/s) below 2 ft/s. Temperature sensing follows Class B ±(0.30 + 0.005 · °C) per EN60751, and the differential-temperature and calculator accuracies follow EN1434.

Outputs are display-selectable and include an analog channel of 4-20 mA, 0-5 V, 0-10 V, or 2-10 V; a pulse/frequency channel of 0-15 V peak pulse at 0-500 Hz or a scalable pulse; and alarm outputs for empty-pipe detection, minimum/maximum velocity, and reverse-flow indication. Analog loads are specified as 536 Ω on the 4-20 mA output, 500 Ω on the 5 V output, and 1.27k Ω on the 10 V output.

Power is 12-42 VDC (0.25 A at 24 VDC) or 12-36 VAC. The unit is rated for 400 psi (27.6 bar) at 100°F (37.8°C). Ambient operating temperature is -20 to 160°F (-29 to 71°C), and the LCD option is rated 4 to 158°F (-20 to 70°C); storage is -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C) and humidity is 10 to 90% non-condensing. The housing is powder-coated die-cast aluminum with 316 SS wetted body, shaft, fitting, and electrodes, a silicone O-ring, and 304 SS thermowells. Enclosure protection is rated NEMA 6P (IP68) and NEMA 4X (IP66) depending on configuration.

Configuration Options

Every model is built to the code IEFB - Accuracy - Process Connection - Electrical Housing Connection - Temperature Sensors - Options (for example, IEFB-L-N-CND-R10-LCD). Each field changes a specific capability:

  • Accuracy / pipe size: standard-accuracy codes are quoted at 1% FS — L for pipe under 10” (250 mm) and S for 4 to 36” (100 to 900 mm) — while high-accuracy codes are quoted at 1% of reading, including F for 4” (100 mm), I for 6” (150 mm), and H for 4 to 10” (100 to 250 mm) pipe.
  • Process connection: N provides a 1” Male NPT connection and B provides a 1” Male BSPT connection.
  • Electrical housing connection: CND provides a conduit-style connection, while the PG option adds PG 16 glands with plenum-rated cabling.
  • Temperature sensors and options: R10 and T10 designate the paired PT temperature-sensor configuration, the LCD option adds a local display, and the COM option adds Modbus communication.

The LCD option also changes the enclosure rating and ambient limits, so the display and non-display builds carry different environmental ratings as noted above.
