Supported Applications
The Omega STR Series comprises compact, digital step and direction drives designed for the basic control of 2-phase stepper motors. These drives are engineered to manage motor operation in applications requiring precise positioning via STEP and DIR inputs with built-in noise filtering.
The series supports a broad range of NEMA frame sizes, including:
- NEMA 11
- NEMA 14
- NEMA 17
- NEMA 24
- NEMA 34
Operating Conditions & Performance
The STR Series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) and supports humidity levels up to 90% non-condensing. The drives feature sophisticated current control, anti-resonance for optimized torque and smoothness, microstep emulation with resolution up to 20,000 steps/revolution, and optically isolated inputs.
Power Supply Requirements
The series requires an external DC power supply. Voltage ranges vary by model:
- STR4: External 24 to 75 Vdc
- STR8: External 24 to 48 Vdc
Physical Dimensions
The drive enclosure measures 118 mm (4.65 in) length, 75.5 mm (2.97 in) width, and 33 mm (1.30 in) height.
Configuration Options
The STR Series is available in three power ranges to match specific motor current requirements:
- STR2: Step and direction stepper drive with 2 A output, recommended for NEMA 11, 14, and 17 motors.
- STR4: Step and direction stepper drive with 4.5 A output, compatible with NEMA 17 (parallel), 24, and select 34 series/connected motors.
- STR8: Step and direction stepper drive with 8 A output, designed for high-torque NEMA 34 applications requiring parallel connections.
Configuration is performed via dip switches and a rotary switch on the drive face. These controls allow selection of motor type, running current, idle current, and step resolution without external software tools.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between models lies in output current capacity and compatible motor families:
- STR2 vs. STR4/STR8: The STR2 is specified for lower-current motors (up to 1.7 A/phase parallel), while the STR4 handles up to 4.5 A output, supporting NEMA 24 and series-connected NEMA 34 motors.
- STR4 vs. STR8: The STR8 provides an 8 A output specifically for high-torque NEMA 34 motors configured in parallel (e.g., OMHT34-487 with 9.01 A/phase).
The series carries CE and RoHS approvals. Optional accessories include power supplies with active PFC filters (OMPS150A24, OMPS300A48), a regeneration clamp for 24 to 80 Vdc systems (OMRC-050), and AC power cords with stripped end termination.
