Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 16A is a microprocessor-based temperature and process controller designed for compact panel mounting. It features universal input capability, supporting thermocouple, RTD, DC voltage, or DC current signals to monitor process values (PV) against set points (SV). The unit incorporates Self-Tune PID control algorithms with Fuzzy Logic functionality to optimize performance across varying thermal loads.

With a waterproof front panel rated NEMA 4X (IP66), the Series 16A is engineered for environments requiring protection against water ingress and corrosion. This enclosure rating supports installations in washdown areas or other harsh conditions where standard controllers may be compromised by moisture or particulate matter.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The controller operates within an ambient temperature range of 14 to 131°F (-10 to 55°C). Accuracy is specified as ±0.25% of span ±1 least significant digit, with a resolution of 1 degree or 0.1 degree depending on the sensor configuration.

Power requirements are flexible for standard industrial environments: 100 to 240 VAC nominal (+10%, -15%), 50 to 400 Hz single phase, or 132 to 240 VDC (+10%, -20%). An optional low-voltage power supply (Option 9502) allows operation on 12-24 Vdc/Vac at 50-400 Hz. The unit weighs 8 oz (227 g).

Output performance varies by type:

  • SSR: 2.0 A at 240 VAC resistive at 77°F (25°C), de-rating to 1.0 A at 130°F (55°C); minimum load of 100 mA.
  • DC SSR: 1.75 A at 32 VDC maximum.
  • Relay: SPST, 3A at 240 VAC resistive; 1.5 A @ 240 VAC inductive.
  • Pilot duty rating (SSR/Relay): 250 VA, 2 A @ 120 VAC, 1 A @ 240 VAC.
  • Alarm relay: SPST, 3 A @ 240 VAC resistive; 1.5 A @ 240 VAC inductive (Pilot duty: 240 VA).
  • Pulsed voltage: 15 VDC at 20 mA.
  • Proportional current: 0 to 20 mADC, scalable into a maximum load resistance of 600 ohms.

Configuration Options

The Series 16A offers extensive configuration options for inputs, outputs, and communication protocols. The physical footprint is designed for a standard DIN panel cutout of 45mm x 45mm (1.77 in ±0.02 in), with an overall housing size of 5.24 in [133] x 1.89 in [48] x 0.45 in [11.4].

Input Configuration: Universal input supports thermocouple, RTD, DC voltage, or DC current via rear terminal block connections.

Output and Alarm Configurations

  • Dual Outputs (A & B): Models support combinations of SSR, Relay (NO/NC), 15 VDC pulsed output, Current loop, or DC SSR. Output A is available in all variants; Output B can be configured as None.
  • Alarm Function: An optional programmable alarm relay (SPST) provides high/low limit indication with selectable auto/manual reset functionality.

Communication and Software Options

Serial communication is available via suffix options to enable integration with SCADA or HMI systems:

  • Lovelink™ Protocol: RS-485 (Option 992) or RS-232 (Option 993).
  • Modbus RTU Protocol: RS-485 (Option 996) or RS-232 (Option 995). Note: Modbus® is a registered trademark of Schneider Automation, Inc.

Additional software and hardware options include:

  • MN-1: Mini-Node™ USB/RS-485 converter for configuration access.
  • LoveLinks III: Configuration software suite.
  • A-600: R/C snubber assembly (P/N 541-0014) recommended for protecting relay outputs driving inductive loads like contactors or solenoids.

Key Product Differences

The Series 16A is divided into two primary feature sets identified by the model number prefix:

  • Standard (Code 2): Provides core temperature and process control with Self-Tune PID, Fuzzy Logic, dual four-digit LED displays for PV/SV, and selectable On-Off, P, PI, or PID modes.
  • Enhanced (Code 3): Includes all Standard features plus Peak/Valley indication, Percent Output indication, Digital Input Filter, Ramp and Soak functionality, and additional advanced control parameters. To enable Enhanced features, the model number prefix changes from 16A2 to 16A3.

Model numbers follow the format 16A<MODEL>-<ALARM>-<OUTPUT A>-<OUTPUT B>. For example, a unit with Enhanced features (Code 3), Alarm enabled (Code 1), SSR Output A (Code 1), and no Output B (Code 0) would be designated as 16A3-1-1-0. The removable front panel design allows for electronics replacement without rewiring the terminal block.

Security is managed through four password-protected levels to restrict access to configuration parameters. Nonvolatile memory retains settings during power loss, and self-diagnostics monitor system integrity.
