Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series PLS2 is an electromechanical paddle level switch designed for the monitoring of bulk materials. The series identity centers on detecting material presence in dry powder or bulk applications where dielectric constant variations may affect other sensing technologies. Documented application areas include mining, food and beverage processing, silos, and hoppers.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series PLS2 operates within a process temperature range of -13 to 176°F (-25 to 80°C) and an ambient temperature range of -4 to 140°F (-20 to 60°C). The unit is rated for pressures up to 11.6 psi (0.8 bar). Performance specifications include a minimum material density requirement of 6 lb/ft³ (96 kg/m³) and permitted mechanical loading limits of 67 lbf (300 N) max on the standard shaft, or 22 lbf (100 N) max when using an optional extension. The enclosure is rated NEMA 4 (IP66) and approved for Class II & III, Div. 1, Group E, F, G hazardous locations.

Configuration Options

The Series PLS2 offers configurable options across power supply, paddle configuration, and shaft extensions. The standard process connection is a 1-1/4" male NPT fitting, with electrical access via screw terminals and conduit entry through a 3/4" female NPT connector.

Paddle and Extension Configurations

The series supports various mechanical configurations to suit installation geometry:

• Standard Paddles: Single sided non-spring paddle included in base models.
• Spring Paddles (Accessories): Available as single-sided spring paddle (PLS2-PL1) or double-sided spring paddle (PLS2-PL2).
• Shaft Extensions: Optional extensions available in lengths of 8.5" (PLS2-EX1), 19.6" (PLS2-EX2), 39.4" (PLS2-EX3), and 78.7" (PLS2-EX4).

Wetted Materials & Construction

The unit features an aluminum, powder-coated enclosure. Wetted materials include a 304 SS paddle, exposed shaft of 303 SS, and NBR shaft seal.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the Series PLS2 are distinguished primarily by power supply voltage (115 VAC, 230 VAC, or 24 VDC) as indicated in the model number suffix. The series utilizes a brushless synchronous motor that rotates at one revolution per minute; operation ceases when paddle rotation is impeded by material buildup, activating an SPDT micro switch via torque detection.

Installation flexibility allows for side or top mounting orientations. A torque adjusting mechanism eliminates the need to change paddle sizes for different materials. The series includes CE and FM approvals. Note that models are not field serviceable; units requiring repair must be returned, as field attempts may void warranty. For hazardous locations, a sealing fitting is required within 18" of the control.
