Supported Applications

The Omega TAT1 and TAT2 Series Over-the-Side Immersion Heaters are designed for heating fluids in tanks. The series supports typical applications including lightweight oils, degreasing solutions, mineral oil, citric and phosphoric acid solutions, water-based chemical solutions, process water, mild caustic solutions (2% maximum), and clean water.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The TAT1-TAT2 Series features Incoloy® 800 sheath heating elements with a standard thermowell. Heaters are factory wired for three-phase power at 240V-3Ph or 480V-3Ph but can be converted to single-phase unless otherwise specified. Watt density varies by application: 3.6 watt/cm² (23 watt/in²) is listed for lightweight oils, degreasing solutions, mineral oil, citric and phosphoric acid solutions, and water-based chemical solutions; 7.4 watt/cm² (42 watt/in²) applies to process water, mild caustic solutions (2% maximum), and clean water.

Standard construction includes a NEMA 4 electrical enclosure with power leads traveling up through the riser pipe to a terminal block. A thermowell for a 9.5 mm (3/8") diameter bulb is standard to accommodate an optional thermostat, which can be field installed to mounting lugs located in the electrical enclosure.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable dimensions and options across TAT1 (straight element) and TAT2 (round element) configurations. Key capabilities include:

  • Wetted Materials: Standard Incoloy® 800; optional 304 or 316 Stainless Steel construction for all wetted parts.
  • Surface Treatments: Passivation of all wetted parts; electropolished or bright annealed surface treatments available for stainless steel or Incoloy® designs (heating elements only).
  • Housing Options: Standard NEMA 4 enclosure with optional NEMA 1 or NEMA 4/7 (explosion resistant) terminal housings.
  • Mounting & Riser Design: Flange, fixed or adjustable bracket on riser for mounting; special riser and/or sludge leg heights available. Standard design includes 102 mm (4") sludge legs to keep elements off the tank bottom.
  • Control Options: Double- or single-pole thermostat; process or hi-limit thermocouple in a thermowell in place of the thermostat; hi-limit thermocouple on sheath.
  • Power Wiring: External power wiring options include flexible cord/plug, armored cable, wire braided, or plain lead wire. Mounting flange for terminal housing is available.
  • Configuration Limits: Up to 12 elements per heater assembly; right-angle riser design offered as an option.

Key Product Differences

The series distinguishes between TAT1 and TAT2 model families based on element shape. The TAT1 models feature a straight element configuration, while the TAT2 models utilize a round element design. Both configurations are available in 3 kW, 6 kW, 9 kW, 12 kW, 15 kW, and 18 kW ratings depending on voltage (240V-3Ph or 480V-3Ph) and application watt density requirements.

Overall dimensions vary by model. Dimension A ranges from 999 mm (39 5/16 in) to 1303 mm (51 1/16 in). Dimension B varies significantly based on element shape, power rating, and application watt density, ranging from 273 mm (10 3/4 in) for lower-power round elements up to 1337 mm (52 5/8 in) for higher-power straight configurations. Approximate net weight ranges from 6 kg (14 lb) to 10 kg (22 lb).
