Supported Applications
The Omega VCM-3 is a cost-effective, 12-channel data acquisition hub designed for monitoring auxiliary machines, balance-of-plant (BOP) machines, and less critical assets as part of enterprise Industry 4.0 digitization. It provides continuous, wired monitoring to bridge the gap between periodic monitoring and wireless sensors. The device supports direct monitoring of roller element bearings (REB) through advanced descriptor processing.
Standard applications include:
- Auxiliary Machinery with REB at constant speed
- Balance-of-plant machines
- Less critical assets requiring continuous vibration data
Operating Conditions & Performance
The VCM-3 operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to +60 °C (-40F to +140F). It features a 24 Bit analog to digital converter (ADC) for signal resolution. The system provides industry-standard CCS (Constant Current Supply), also known as ICP® or IEPE, for acceleration sensors.
Measurement capabilities are defined by adjustable filter ranges per descriptor type:
- Acceleration "BP" and Acceleration enveloping "ECU": 1 Hz - 10 kHz (adjustable filters)
- Velocity "BPI": 10 Hz - 1000 Hz (adjustable filters to ISO Standards 10816/20816)
The default scaling of all accelerometer input channels is 100 mV/g, which can be fully adjusted by the user. The CCS sensor average bias voltage (vavg) is measured on each channel as descriptor 'PT', though no alarming is provided for this parameter.
Configuration Options
The VCM-3 series supports a 12-channel configuration with specific input and output capabilities:
- Sensor Inputs: Twelve dynamic vibration signal inputs accepting CCS (ICP®/IEPE) acceleration sensors.
- Descriptors per Channel:
- Channels 1–5: Acceleration "BP" in m/s² or g; rms, peak, crest factor with adjustable filters (*1Hz - 10kHz).
- Channels 6–8: Acceleration enveloping "ECU" with adjustable filters (*1kHz - 10kHz).
- Channels 9–12: Velocity "BPI" (acceleration Band Pass integrated to velocity) in mm/s or in/s; rms with adjustable filters to ISO Standards 10816/20816 (*10Hz - 1000Hz).
- Network Connectivity: Built-in network switch functionality and an optical SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) connector for stable long-distance connections.
- Data Protocols: Integrated Modbus TCP Server and OPC UA Server, eliminating the need for additional software or hardware.
The device includes a built-in web server (VCM-3 Homepage) to access FFT-type data plots for troubleshooting and commissioning. Individual Alert and Danger alarm limits with delay times can be set on each of the twelve vibration input channels for descriptors 'BP', 'ECU', and 'BPI'. All sensor input channels can be enabled or disabled individually.
Key Product Differences
The series is available in a DIN-rail mounting configuration, identified by model code VCM-3-DIN. Standard monitoring templates are provided for different unit systems:
- VCM-3-TPL-AUX-SI: Auxiliary Machinery, REB, Constant Speed (SI = Metric units)
- VCM-3-TPL-AUX-IMP: Auxiliary Machinery, REB, Constant Speed (Imperial units)
