Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 8600 Temperature/Process Controllers are designed for temperature and process control applications. These microprocessor-based units feature a universal input capable of accepting thermocouple types J, K, E, T, L, N, B, C, S, & R; RTDs including 100Ω Pt. NIST, 100Ω Pt. DIN, 120Ω Ni Industrial, and 1000Ω Pt. DIN; differential input (-10 to +10 mV DC); and process inputs (0 to 20 mA DC, 0 to 10 VDC). The series includes a standard 24 volt isolated, regulated power supply intended to operate most standard 4-20 mA transmitters.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 8600 operates within an ambient temperature range of 14 to 131°F (-10 to 55°C). For process inputs, the display is fully programmable from -1999 to +9999 with a selectable decimal point location. Most thermocouple and RTD inputs support whole or tenth degree displays. Accuracy is specified as ±0.25% of span, ±1 least significant digit.

Input impedance specifications are 3 megohms minimum for thermocouples; 5000 ohms for voltage; 10 ohms for current; and a maximum RTD current of 200μA. The front panel carries a NEMA 4X (IP66) rating, while the enclosure is rated NEMA 4X (IP 65). Units weigh 13 oz (369 g).

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable output combinations and orientation options. Standard features include Self-Tune, Fuzzy Logic, fully adjustable PID, Auto/Manual control with bumpless transfer and front panel activation key, percent output indication, peak and valley indication, loop break protection and indication, four password protected security levels, and 16 segments of ramp/soak with program end control. All outputs are isolated from the inputs.

Available output configurations include:

  • SSR: 2.5 A at 240 VAC resistive at 77°F (25°C), de-rated to 1.25 A at 130°F (55°C). Includes standard 15 VDC SSR drive.
  • Relay: SPDT, 10 A at 240 VAC resistive; 1/2 hp at 120 VAC; 1/3 hp at 240 VAC. Alarm relay is SPST, 3 A at 240 VAC resistive.
  • Current: Proportional current output of 0-20 mA DC, scalable into a maximum load resistance of 600 ohms.
  • Voltage: Switched voltage of 15 VDC at 20 mA; 15 VDC Pulsed option available.

The controllers can be programmed for on-off, PID, heat/cool, or latching alarm modes. Orientation options include vertical and horizontal mounting configurations with corresponding panel cutout dimensions of 4-9/16 in [115.8 mm] width by 3-19/32 in [91.3 mm] height (horizontal) or depth adjustments for vertical models.

Key Product Differences

The Series 8600 is available with single or dual setpoint outputs depending on the model configuration. Specific enumerated variants include:

  • Model 86111-0: Dual SSR output.
  • Model 86120-0: Single 15 VDC Pulsed output with no second output.
  • Model 86133-0: Dual Relay output.
  • Model 86153-0: Combined 0-20 mA and Relay output.

An accessory R/C snubber (P/N A-600) is available for use with relay outputs switching inductive loads. The display consists of two 4-digit, 7-segment LEDs; horizontal models feature a 0.4" (10 mm) high display, while vertical models have a 0.3" (7.62 mm) high display.
