Supported Applications
The Omega OM-USB-TEMP series comprises USB 2.0 full-speed data acquisition modules designed for temperature and voltage measurement in Microsoft® Windows® environments (Vista, 7, 8, 10). These standalone plug-and-play devices serve as eight-channel differential input systems programmable via software to interface with thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, semiconductor sensors, or analog voltages. The series supports data logging and real-time monitoring applications where a compact USB-connected module is required for sensor signal acquisition.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The modules operate within an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F) with storage temperatures from -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F). Humidity tolerance is rated at 0% to 90% RH non-condensing. The series utilizes a 24-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter for each pair of differential input channels, with a maximum throughput rate of up to 100 samples per second per channel and a response time of 2 samples/sec max when all active channels are engaged.
Measurement accuracy varies by sensor type and model configuration:
- Thermocouples (Types J, K, R, S, T, N, E, B): Accuracy ranges from ±0.25°C to ±0.65°C depending on the specific thermocouple type and temperature span.
- RTDs: 100 Ω platinum RTD measurements (2, 3, or 4-wire) offer typical errors between ±0.11°C and ±2.78°C across ranges from -200°C to 600°C.
- Thermistors: Supported resistances include 2252 Ω through 30,000 Ω with maximum errors of ±0.05°C for the OM-USB-TEMP/OM-USB-5203 models across -40°C to 120°C ranges.
- Semiconductor Sensors: TMP36 or equivalent sensors provide ±0.50°C accuracy from -40°C to 150°C (-40°F to 302°F).
- Analog Voltage (OM-USB-TEMP-AI only): Absolute accuracies range from ±0.36 mV for the ±1.25V range up to ±2.78 mV for the ±10V range.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable sensor inputs and output options tailored to specific data acquisition needs:
- Sensor Inputs: Eight differential channels software-programmable for thermocouple, RTD (100 Ω platinum), thermistor, semiconductor sensors, or DC voltage.
- Digital I/O: All models include eight independent, TTL-compatible digital input/output channels for monitoring inputs and generating alarms.
- Data Logging: The OM-USB-5203 variant includes on-board data logging capability to a CompactFlash card (shipped with 512 MB).
- Voltage Input: The OM-USB-TEMP-AI model supports analog voltage inputs in ±1.25V, ±2.5V, ±5V, and ±10V ranges.
- Counter Output: Available on the OM-USB-TEMP-AI (1 channel).
The modules feature screw terminal connectors accepting 16 to 30 AWG wire for sensor inputs, ground, power, and digital I/O. Power is supplied via the USB cable; no external supply is required for standard operation, though the OM-USB-5203 requires an external AC adaptor (OM-USB-5200-ADAPTOR) when data logging.
Key Product Differences
The series consists of three primary model families with distinct functional capabilities:
- OM-USB-TEMP: An 8-channel temperature input USB data acquisition module supporting thermocouple, RTD, thermistor, and semiconductor sensors.
- OM-USB-TEMP-AI: An 8-channel temperature/voltage input module that adds analog voltage measurement capabilities (±1.25V to ±10V) and a single counter output channel.
- OM-USB-5203: An 8-channel temperature input module with integrated data logging functionality, including an internal CompactFlash card slot for standalone recording.
All models are compatible with TracerDAQ software; the OM-USB-TEMP-AI and OM-USB-5203 support advanced features via TracerDAQ Pro, such as event counters, alarm conditions, hardware triggering, and linear scaling. The physical dimensions for all modules are 127 L x 89 W x 36 mm H (5.0" x 3.5" x 1.4"). Weights vary by model: OM-USB-TEMP/OM-USB-TEMP-AI weigh 182 g (6.4 oz), while the OM-USB-5203 weighs 227 g (8.0 oz).
