Supported Applications
The HOBO MX2203 and MX2204 are waterproof temperature data loggers built for long-term deployments in streams, lakes, and oceans. They use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to deliver high-accuracy temperature measurements to iOS or Android mobile devices, with a large 96,000-measurement memory for extended unattended logging.

Reliable water detection requires a water conductivity level of 100 µS/cm or greater; deionized water or water below 100 µS/cm may not be detected, and the conductivity circuit may not reliably detect water that has frozen around the electrodes, i.e. below 0°C (32°F).
Operating Conditions & Performance
Both models share the same temperature sensor performance:
- Range: -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F) in air and -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F) in water.
- Accuracy: ±0.25°C from -20°C to 0°C (±0.45°F from -4°F to 32°F); ±0.2°C from 0°C to 70°C (±0.36°F from 32°F to 158°F).
- Resolution: 0.01°C (0.018°F); drift <0.1°C (0.18°F) per year.
The radio uses Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth 4.0) with a transmission range up to 30.5 m (100 ft) line-of-sight and radio power of 1 mW (0 dBm). The logging rate is selectable from 1 second to 18 hours over the -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F) operating range, and both models carry an IP68 rating. Power is supplied by a CR2477 3V lithium battery. Both units carry CE Marking and comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules.
Configuration Options
The two loggers use the same temperature sensor, radio, and memory but differ in depth rating, response time, case material, and physical size:
- MX2203: waterproof to 122 m (400 ft); response time 17 minutes typical to 90% in air moving 1 m/s, unmounted, and 7 minutes typical to 90% in stirred water, unmounted; polypropylene case with EPDM O-ring, stainless steel screws, and Santoprene (TPE) boot; 4.45 x 7.32 x 3.58 cm (1.75 x 2.88 x 1.41 inches).
- MX2204: waterproof to 1,524 m (5,000 ft); response time 15 minutes typical to 90% in air moving 1 m/s, unmounted, and 4 minutes typical to 90% in stirred water, unmounted; epoxy case with Santoprene (TPE) boot; 4.06 x 6.99 x 3.51 cm (1.6 x 2.75 x 1.38 inches).
