Supported Applications
The Omega High Accuracy Ceramic Wire Wound Platinum RTD Elements series comprises two distinct product families: the ceramic wire-wound elements (model prefix KN) and glass wire-wound elements (model prefixes GX/GO). The ceramic series is documented for applications requiring high temperature stability and shock resistance. The glass series is described as suitable for low or very high temperatures where good vibration resistance is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series covers two primary measurement ranges depending on the element construction:
- Ceramic elements (KN): -200 to 600 °C (-330 to 1110 °F)
- Glass elements (GX/GO): -220 to 400 °C (-365 to 750 °F)
Accuracy is defined by IEC751 standards. Ceramic elements are rated Class A, while glass elements are rated Class B. The tolerance formulas provided in the source documentation are:
- Class A (Ceramic): ±0.15 + 0.002|T| Ω for T in °C
- Class B (Glass): ±0.3 + 0.005|T| Ω for T in °C
A detailed tolerance table lists specific deviations at discrete temperatures from -200 to 600 °C, with Class A tolerances ranging from ±0.15 °C at 0 °C to ±1.35 °C at 600 °C.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable dimensions and electrical configurations across the ceramic and glass families.
Ceramic Wire-Wound Elements (KN)
- Nominal Resistance: 1 x 100 Ω or 2 x 100 Ω
- Diameter Options: 1.5 mm, 2.6 mm, and 4.5 mm
- Lengths: 15 mm to 30 mm (e.g., model 1PT100KN1515CLA is 15 mm length x 1.5 mm diameter)
- Dual Element Configurations: Available as dual element models, indicated by the "2" prefix in part numbers such as 2PT100KN3045CLA.
Glass Wire-Wound Elements (GX/GO)
- Nominal Resistance: Includes 1 x 10 Ω and 1 x 100 Ω options
- Diameter Options: Ranges from 1.0 mm to 4.5 mm (e.g., model 1PT100GX1510 is 1.8 mm diameter; model 1PT100GO1545 is 4.5 mm diameter)
- Lengths: Overall lengths of 10 mm and 15 mm with varying active lengths
Response Time & Self-Heating
Performance varies by model geometry and medium. Response times in flowing water (V = 0.4 m/sec) range from 0.2 to 0.8 seconds for 50% response, while moving air (V = 1 m/sec) response times span 2.0 to 30.0 seconds for 50%. Self-heating errors in flowing air are documented between 0.06 and 0.39 °C/mW depending on the specific model.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction within this series is the core material: ceramic versus glass, which dictates accuracy class (Class A vs. Class B) and temperature range limits. Ceramic elements provide higher maximum operating temperatures up to 600 °C compared to the 400 °C limit of glass elements.
Model numbering reflects these variations:
- Ceramic Series (KN): Follows the pattern 1PT100KNCLA. Dual element versions use a "2" prefix, such as 2PT100KN3045CLA.
- Glass Series: Uses prefixes GX or GO followed by dimension codes (e.g., 1PT100GX0518 for a 10 mm length element with 1.8 mm diameter and 5 mm active length).
All RTD elements in this series feature leads that are 10 mm long, with welded insulated extension leads available as an option.
