Supported Applications

The Omega FSW-6000/7000 Series Thermal Dispersion Flow Switches monitor the flow status of liquids, air, and gas. The series is designed to detect level in tanks or pipes using thermal dispersion technology with two platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs). One RTD serves as a reference while the other is heated above the medium temperature; flow over the sensor disperses heat from the heated element, triggering a switch state change when the setpoint is reached. The switches are suitable for sanitary applications up to 120°C (248°F) with CIP capability and can be coated with ECTFE or epoxy for aggressive mediums.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates on the principle of thermal dispersion, offering optimal temperature compensation unaffected by gradients. Measurement ranges cover 3 cm/s to 3 m/s (0.09 to 9.84 ft/sec) for liquids and 5 cm/sec to 15 m/sec (0.16 to 49 ft/sec) for gas. Accuracy is specified as ±10% of setpoint with repeatability of ±1% of setpoint. The response time is adjustable from 1 to 10 seconds, with a maximum start-up delay of 12 seconds.

Process temperature ranges are -20 to 80°C (-4 to 176°F), extending to 120°C (248°F) for the sanitary option. Ambient operating temperatures range from -20 to 60°C (-4 to 140°F). The maximum working pressure is rated at 300 bar (4351 psi). Enclosures carry a NEMA 4 (IP65) protection class.

Configuration Options

The FSW-6000/7000 Series offers configurable power, housing, connection types, and insertion lengths to accommodate diverse installation requirements. The series supports the following options:

  • Power Supply: 85 to 240 Vac (50/60 Hz) for FSW-6000 models; 24 Vdc ±10% for FSW-7000 models.
  • Housing Material: Glass filled nylon standard or aluminum die cast option. Nylon head dimensions are 88 Dia x 80 mm H (3.5 x 2.5" H); Aluminum head dimensions are 88 Dia x 108 mm H (3.5 x 4.25" H).
  • Process Connections: Threaded connections from ½ to 1½ NPT, Tri-Grip™ (Tri-Clamp® compatible), and flange options including 2" ANSI flange, 150# 316 SS. Other connection types are available upon consultation.
  • Insertion Lengths: Standard lengths include 35 mm (1⅜"), 50 mm (2"), and 75 mm (3"). Custom insertion lengths are available by consulting the Flow Engineering Department.
  • Wetted Materials: Sensing element and connection made of 316 SS. ECTFE or epoxy coating is available for aggressive mediums; flanged connections or a minimum 1" threaded connection are recommended for ECTFE coatings.
  • Output Signal: 250 Vac SPDT 5 A relay with an adjustable potentiometer for switch point adjustment.
  • Visual Indication: An 8-LED bargraph indicates flow status: green LEDs show flow rate above setpoint, a yellow LED shows flow at or above setpoint, red LEDs indicate flow below setpoint, and a di-chromatic (red/green) LED displays switch point status.

Key Product Differences

The series is divided into two primary power configurations: the FSW-6000 Series operates on 85 to 240 Vac, while the FSW-7000 Series operates on 24 Vdc. Model numbers follow a build-to-order structure (e.g., FSW-6(**)(**)(**) or FSW-7(**)(**)(**)) where suffixes define process connection (*), enclosure (**), and insertion length (***). Specific stocked variants include the FSW-6212 with ¾ NPT thread, glass filled nylon housing, and 51 mm (2") insertion; the FSW-7111 with ½ NPT thread, glass filled nylon housing, and 35 mm (1⅜") insertion; and the FSW-7112 with ½ NPT thread, glass filled nylon housing, and 50 mm (2") insertion. Accessories include a continuous tone alarm (model 70A-1), a 4-conductor wire spool of 30.5 m (100') (TX4-100), and a 24 Vdc power supply (U24Y175).
