Supported Applications
The Omega CN38S Series is a microprocessor-based digital electronic controller designed for temperature measurement and control applications. The series features an ergonomic keypad with 'Sensitive Touch' technology intended to provide protection against dust and liquids while allowing direct set-point access. It supports ON/OFF or PID control modes, including autotuning functionality.
Documented sensor compatibility includes:
- Thermocouples: Type J and K
- RTDs: Pt 100 and Pt 1000 (2-wire)
- Thermistors: PTC (990 Ω @ 25°C) and NTC (10 kΩ @ 25°C)
The instrument is intended for indoor use in an electrical panel with exposed terminals. It is not designed for hazardous locations, nor should it be used as safety equipment or in applications where failure may cause dangerous situations.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The CN38S Series operates within a specified ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) and supports humidity levels up to <95 RH% without condensation. The front panel offers IP65 protection with an optional gasket according to EN60070-1, while the screw terminal block is rated IP20.
Performance specifications vary by input type:
- Accuracy: ±(0.5% span ±1 digit) @ 25°C
- Resolution: 0.1°C with automatic scale change (autorangeing)
- Response Time: Sampling rate of 1 s; display updating time of 1 s
- Storage Temperature: -25 to 60°C (-13 to 140°F)
The controller features a 3-digit red display and includes programmable parameters for set points, alarms, soft start time, compressor protection time, and password-protected configuration.
Measurement Ranges by Sensor Type
- Type J/K Thermocouple: -40 to 999°C (-40 to 999°F)
- RTD (Pt 100, Pt 1000): -50 to 850°C (-58 to 999°F) and -50.0 to 99.9°C (-58.0 to 99.9°F)
- PTC Thermistor: -50 to 150°C (-67 to 302°F) and -50.0 to 99.9°C (-67.0 to 99.9°F)
- NTC Thermistor: -50 to 110°C (-58 to 230°F) and -50.0 to 99.9°C (-58.0 to 99.9°F)
Configuration Options
The CN38S Series is configurable across input types, output signals, and power supply options. The model number follows the format: CN38S-<INPUT_TYPE>-<OUTPUT1>-<OUTPUT2>-<VOLTAGE>.
Input Types
- TC: Thermocouple Type J or K
- RTD: Resistance Temperature Detector (Pt 100, Pt 1000)
- TH: Thermistor (PTC or NTC)
Output Configurations
The series supports two independent outputs with the following options:- R1 / R2: SPDT Relay, 8 A/250 Vac on resistive load (6A AC3/250 VAC), or 3 A/250V
- DC1 / DC2: DC pulse for SSR drive. Not isolated; specifications include 12V ±20% @ 1 mA, 10V ±20% @ 20 mA, and OFF state <0.5V.
Output functions are programmable via parameters to support PID control (heating or cooling action), ON/OFF control, absolute high/low alarms, band alarms, deviation alarms, and second set-point control.
Power Supply Options
The series is available with the following power inputs:- (None): 100 to 240 VAC/VDC (±10%) or 100 to 230 Vac/Vdc (±10% depending on source)
- 12V: 12 VDC isolated (-15% to +10%)
- 24V: 24 VAC/DC (-15% to +10%) or 24 Vac/Vdc (±10%)
Mechanical & Electrical Connections
- Dimensions: Front panel cutout approximately 78 x 35 mm; overall depth varies by housing configuration.
- Mounting: Panel mounting with a maximum thickness of 15 mm. Housing material is plastic, self-extinguishing (V-0 according to UL 94).
- Connections: 11 screw terminals (M3) for cables from 0.25 to 2.6 mm² (AWG 22 to AWG 14).
Key Product Differences
The CN38S Series distinguishes itself through specific input/output combinations and voltage ratings rather than distinct sub-series names.- Input Distinction: Models are designated by -TC-, -RTD-, or -TH- to define the sensor family supported.
- Output Pairing: Variants combine relay outputs (R1, R2) and DC pulse outputs (DC1, DC2). Common configurations include Relay/Relay (R1-R2), Pulse/Pulse (DC1-DC2), or mixed DC1-R2.
- Voltage Suffixes: Standard models operate on 100–240 VAC/VDC. Low-voltage variants are explicitly marked with a suffix of -12V (for 12 VDC isolated) or -24V (for 24 VAC/DC).
- Accessories: A field-installable noise suppression kit, model CNQUENCHARC, is available for 110 to 230 Vac applications.

It's the Bomb!
This little unit works sweet. If you need a 12 volt controller, this is the bomb! I am using this as a fan control for my rocket stove. I needed a higher sensor range than I could get with the 15 dollar Inkbird controller. I haven't had much experience with controllers other than an Inkbird 120v that I used for an old coffee vending machine @ 95c max, and Omega CN7500 120v that I used for a kiln. It seems easy enough to operate. NOTE, the sensor must be isolated. I blew up the first two (my fault) by not isolating the probe from the metal frame of the rocket stove.

Misleading!
The specification sheet shows the unit supporting both Pt100 and Pt1000 sensors, so I ordered the RTD unit only to discover that it supports ONLY Pt100. For Pt1000 support you need to buy the thermistor unit!! The product selection tool and the specifications page make no mention of this - this detail is buried in the manual.

Works as needed. Should have more features.
Disappointed in the missing options. Manual shows options that are not available on device. The option to enable decimal point is not installed. Does not make sense as it is a basic function. The menu skips over that option. They do not tell you this and do not give you the model that allows this function.

Hello, can I use it with an external temperature sensor ? I always need to know the temperature inside my product to adapt the voltage and get as close as possible to the desired temperature. Thank's
The CN38S series does accept Thermocouples RTD's and Thermistors to display temperature.

I want to use this with 10k NTC thermistors, but I need to know which temperature curve it is designed for. For example: 3969K
Thank you for your inquiry. You may use the NTC 10k curve. This would be Thermistors 44006 or 44031 located on our "Thermistor Resistance Temperature" table located in the RTD & Thermistor Reference Data category at this technical reference: https://www.omega.co.uk/temperature/Z/zsection.asp

I'm trying to use the CN38S-TC-DC1-DC2 with a refrigerator and set the "PCT" "compressor protection time" to 5 minutes. this wait-time is however ignored and it keeps switching on and off within a few seconds. does "PCT" only work in On/OFF mode?
Thank you for contacting Omega. The PCT feature is only available if at least one output is programmed as cooling. With the controller being connected to a refrigerator, that would be a cooling application. Our Tech Support engineer has emailed you to confirm that you do have the controller programmed for cooling and help resolve this for you.
