Supported Applications

The OS36SM Series is a subminiature infrared thermocouple built around a thermopile sensing element that measures surface temperature without contact. Its very small 303 stainless steel body, 6.4 mm (0.25 in) in diameter, lets it be installed in tight locations and aimed at small targets, while the self-powered Type K output connects directly to existing thermocouple instrumentation without any internal or external power supply.

Because the measurement is non-contact, the sensor introduces no thermal-mass errors and no frictional heat errors on moving surfaces, which makes it a strong fit for rotating parts, moving webs, and process surfaces that a contact probe cannot follow. The 1:2 field of view resolves a minimum spot size of 3 mm at zero distance, allowing accurate readings of compact targets.

 • Non-contact surface temperature measurement with no moving parts
 • Self-powered thermopile sensor requiring no power connection
 • Temperature compensated with a fixed 0.90 emissivity

Operating Conditions & Performance

The OS36SM provides an interchangeability accuracy of 1% under factory calibration conditions and a response time of 150 ms to 95% of a step change. Its dominant spectral response covers 6.5 to 14 microns, and the output impedance ranges from 20 to 60 kOhm depending on the selected temperature range.

The sensor is rated for an internal case ambient temperature range of -20 to 85°C (-4 to 100°F) and the same -20 to 85°C (-4 to 100°F) storage range, in a non-condensing environment. The enclosure exceeds NEMA 4 and 4X, corresponding to IP65 and 66. The cable assembly is 30 AWG solid wire with glass braid insulation and a tin/copper overbraid for low noise, and the sensor weighs 30 g.

The high output impedance is an important integration consideration, because it may not allow the sensor to be used with some meters. The OS36SM is CE marked, RoHS compliant, and carries a 2 year warranty.

Configuration Options

All OS36SM sensors share the same subminiature 303 SS housing, thermopile element, and Type K output; the variants differ in the factory-set temperature range and in the connector option chosen at order time.

The temperature range code tunes the sensor for a specific measurement band:

 • 50F: -18 to 30°C (0 to 85°F)
 • 80F: 0 to 50°C (32 to 120°F)
 • 140F: 20 to 90°C (70 to 190°F)
 • 180F: 60 to 105°C (140 to 220°F)
 • 240F: 80 to 120°C (180 to 250°F)
 • 280F: 115 to 165°C (240 to 330°F)
 • 340F: 140 to 190°C (280 to 370°F)
 • 440F: 160 to 260°C (320 to 500°F)

Stripped leads are standard on every unit. Optionally, the sensor can be supplied with a GMP subminiature low-noise thermocouple connector pair (suffix -GMP) or a standard-size low-noise thermocouple connector pair (suffix -GST).

Key Product Differences

Order codes follow the structure OS36SM-K-<temperature range code>, all sharing the Type K infrared thermocouple output. The range-code lineup consists of OS36SM-K-50F, OS36SM-K-80F, OS36SM-K-140F, OS36SM-K-180F, OS36SM-K-240F, OS36SM-K-340F, and OS36SM-K-440F. Connector suffixes may be appended, as in the ordering example OS36SM-K-140F-GMP.

A range of mounting and air-purge accessories complete the series:

 • OS36SM-MR — stainless steel mounting ring with silicone cushions
 • OS36SM-MRB — stainless steel mounting ring bracket with silicone cushions
 • OS36SM-MRR — metal clamp mounting ring with rubber cushion
 • OS36SM-RAMR — stainless steel right-angle mounting ring for mounting through fittings
 • OS36SM-APJ — aluminum air purge jacket
 • OS36SM-MR-APJ — stainless steel mounting ring for the air purge jacket
 • OS36SM-APJF — plastic air purge jacket fitting with lock nut, sealing nut and hub
 • OS36SM-MTF — plastic fitting with lock and sealing nut and hub

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cable fails for application with movement Product works well but the wired connection to the sensor fails where it connects to sensor housing. If your application has any movement choose a different sensor as any stress on the cable will eventually cause it to fail. 3 out of 5 of my sensors have failed this way.

I have purchased the OS36SM-K-140F. I have this wired to a Allen Bradley 1734-IT2I thermocouple input module and I cannot get it to read the correct temperature. Does anyone know if this OS36 will work with the IT2I.

Asked by: Anonymous
The OS36SM is a Infrared Thermocouple and needs to have an instrument with a high input impedance probably > than 100K Ohms. Check the IT2I for it's impedance and if too low see if that is adjustable or select a different instrument.
