Supported Applications

The Dwyer Model SPK is a 5-watt solar panel system designed to power Dwyer Instruments Inc. flow meters in remote applications where electricity is unavailable or impractical. The series serves as a primary power source for field installations and functions as a backup power supply, providing up to 40 days of operation during periods of darkness.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Model SPK operates within an ambient temperature range of -40° F to +158° F (-40° C to +70° C). The system delivers a typical output of 17 V at 290 mA. It includes a high-efficiency series PWM charge controller featuring temperature compensation and built-in lightning protection.

Configuration Options

The Model SPK kit is configured for mounting on vertical pipe using included hardware. The system requires an external power storage component to function, specifically a 12V Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery which is not included in the package.

Mounting and Dimensions

  • Pipe Mount: Bracket, band clamps, and mounting hardware for 1-1/2 or 2 inch vertical pipe are included.
  • Solar Panel Dimensions: The panel measures approximately 8.5" to 13-7/8 in width by 14.2" height (data sheet variations exist; see specifications).
  • Weight: 4 pounds for the solar panel and mounting bracket.

Battery Requirements

  • Mechanical Meters with Display Electronics: Requires a minimum capacity of 22 Amp-hours (12V SLA deep-cycle).
  • Low Power Magnetic Flowmeters (<50mA): Requires only deep-cycle SLA batteries with a minimum capacity of 33 Amp-hours.
  • Alternative Batteries: Marine/RV grade or automotive batteries may be used but must be upsized in Amp-hour capacity by two to four times for equivalent service life.

Installation and Maintenance Notes

  • The solar panel should be oriented toward the midday sun with no significant shading.
  • An enclosure housing the battery and charge controller must be white or shiny metallic to minimize heat build-up, or shaded if other colors are used; venting is recommended for safety.
  • A 1 Amp time lag (slow-blow) fuse should be installed at the positive battery connection using a weatherproof holder in unprotected locations.

Key Product Differences

The Model SPK is offered as a single configuration kit. The series does not include variations for different output voltages or mounting styles beyond the standard 1-1/2 to 2 inch vertical pipe bracket provided in the package.
