Supported Applications

The Omega SP-001/SP-002 Smart IR Sensor is an ultra-miniature, non-contact infrared temperature probe for surface measurement from -70 to 380°C (-94 to 716°F). As part of the Omega Link ecosystem, it targets non-contact monitoring of moving, hard-to-reach, or otherwise inaccessible surfaces in data-acquisition, IIoT, and wireless sensing deployments.

It measures infrared surface temperature across a wide range of materials, including paper, thick plastics, rubber, food and organic materials, painted metals, and dusty, rusty, or oily surfaces.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The sensor reads infrared surface temperature from -70 to 380°C (-94 to 716°F) with a 1 second response time. Accuracy is 1°C (1.8°F) or 1% of reading, whichever is greater, over a 0 to 50°C ambient, and 4°C (7.2°F) or 3% of reading across the entire ambient range; repeatability is 1°C (1.8°F) or 1% of reading.

  • Power: 3.3 VDC, 0.05 W maximum.
  • Digital interface: I2C (SCL/SDA), two discrete I/O signals (DIO 0, DIO 1), and an interrupt (INTR), through a modular M12 8-pin male connector.
  • Ambient range: -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F); humidity less than 95% RH, non-condensing.
  • Enclosure and durability: stainless steel housing rated NEMA 6 / IP67, with vibration tolerance of 10 Gs from 10 Hz to 500 Hz.

The probe measures 12 mm in diameter and 67 mm in length, and weighs 35 g (1.2 oz). The series carries CE and UKCA approvals.

Configuration Options

Model configuration follows SP-00x-<Discrete I/O Pins>, where the base number sets the field of view (FOV) and the suffix sets the discrete I/O pin configuration:

  • SP-001 vs SP-002: differ by field of view.
  • -0 vs -1 suffix: differ by discrete I/O pin configuration.

All variants share the same -70 to 380°C measurement range, stainless steel M12 form factor, and Omega Link smart-interface capability, and can act as an edge controller with autonomous decision-making when paired with an Omega Link wireless gateway.

Key Product Differences

The series is offered in four models:

  • SP-001-0
  • SP-001-1
  • SP-002-0
  • SP-002-1

Compatible accessories include M12 cordsets and splitters (for example DM12CAB-8-1, DM12CAB-8-3, and DM12CAB-8-5, and the M12.8-T-SPLIT) and the SP-001-MB mounting bracket.

Can this item be wired directly to a temperature controller, or only to a computer?

Asked by: nssdiver
Thank you for your interest in our product Thank you for your interest in our product The SP-001-0 series cannot be wired directly to a temperature controller. Currently it can only be used with the IF-001-0 USB cable and the XW-ED and XW-ED-Pro wireless transmitters. If you want to connect directly to a Temperature controller you may want to consider the OS136A and OS137A series which can be offered for example in a 4 to 20 mA or Type K output please see the attached specs https://assets.omega.com/pdf/test-and-measurement-equipment/temperature/sensors/infrared-sensors/OS137A.pdf https://assets.omega.com/pdf/test-and-measurement-equipment/temperature/sensors/infrared-sensors/OS136A.pdf

Can you have more than one sensor connected to your PC?

Asked by: JcAlo57_HP
Yes you can have more than one of these devices directly connected to your PC via USB, each one would need the IF-001 USB interface.
