Supported Applications

The Omega U-Series ultrasonic distance sensors (models USR03, UMR14, ULR30, UXLR50) perform non-contact target distance measurement designed for tough industrial environments. Documented applications include roll diameter monitoring, loop control, web break detection, dimensioning, proximity sensing, sort/select operations, and level measurement.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates in ambient temperatures from -40 to +158 F (-40 to +70 C) with internal or external reference target temperature compensation. Sensors are rated for 0-100% humidity (avoiding heavy condensation) and feature IP-68, NEMA-4X ingress protection. Measurement accuracy is better than 0.5% of the target distance in a stable, homogeneous air environment; performance may be affected by temperature gradients, target echo strength, or speed of sound variations.

Performance specifications vary by model range:

  • USR03: Maximum range 3 ft (91cm); deadband minimum 1.75 in (4.4 cm). Repeatability is the greater of +/-0.03 in. (0.76 mm) or 0.25% of target distance.
  • UMR14: Maximum range 14 ft. (4.3 m); deadband 4 in. (10.2 cm). Repeatability matches USR03 specifications.
  • ULR30: Maximum range 30 ft. (9.1m); dead band 10 in. (25.4cm). Repeatability is 0.2% of target distance.
  • UXLR50: Maximum range 50 Ft. (15.2m); dead band 12 in. (30.5cm). Repeatability matches ULR30 specifications.

Default measurement rates are 50 msec (20 Hz) for USR03/UMR14, 100 msec (10 Hz) for ULR30, and 200 msec (5 Hz) for UXLR50. Rates are adjustable from 5 msec to 2.8 hours; faster rates limit maximum target distance.

Configuration Options

The series supports multiple output configurations selectable via OmegaVIEW software or rear pushbutton TEACH adjustment (except on serial-only and UXLR50 models). Full-featured USR03/UMR14 sensors provide two outputs, while ULR30 and UXLR50 offer five simultaneous outputs. Available signal types include:

  • Voltage: 0-10 VDC (or custom via OmegaVIEW; 10 mA max).
  • Current Loop: 4-20 mA sourcing or sinking, configurable to 0-20 mA.
  • Switches: PNP or NPN solid-state switches rated at 150 mA (external 40 VDC max.), configured for setpoint or window mode with reversible polarity (NO/NC).
  • Serial Data: RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces supporting Modbus slave, ASCII streaming, or SYNCH protocols. RS-485 models support 2-wire multi-drop addressing (addresses 1-247) with baud rates from 9600 to 115200.

Power requirements are 10-30 VDC @ 55 mA max for USR03/UMR14 and 10-30 VDC @ 70 mA max for ULR30/UXLR50. Sensors feature embedded shielded PUR cables with tinned wire ends (6-wire or 9-wire depending on series) or optional M12 connectorized cables.

Key Product Differences

The USR03-Series encompasses four primary sensor families distinguished by range, housing material, and mounting options:

  • USR03: 3 ft (91cm) maximum range; housed in 316 stainless steel with M30x1.5 mm or 1-in NPT thread.
  • UMR14: 14 ft. (4.3 m) maximum range; housed in 316 stainless steel with M30x1.5 mm or 1-in NPT thread.
  • ULR30: 30 ft. (9.1m) maximum range; housed in 316 stainless steel with dual 1.5-in NPT threads.
  • UXLR50: 50 Ft. (15.2m) maximum range; available in 316 stainless steel or PVC housing. Mounting options include clamp mount, rear-mounted 1.5-in NPT, or dual 2.5-in NPT threads.

Model numbers follow the structure [PRODUCT]-[MOUNT]-[SERIAL INTERFACE], where serial interface codes denote RS-232 (PC COM port) or RS-485 (addressable multi-drop). Accessories include OmegaVIEW software, USB interface kits, mounting brackets (MB30-SS90), and stainless steel nuts.

Can the USR03 (or any other ultrasonic level sensor) be used to measure the level of foam in a tank, or will it cut through the foam and return the level of the fluid below the foam?

Asked by: Trevor R
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the ultrasonic sensor will not be able to penetrate thru foam if there is a buildup. Another option is the guided wave radar that can work or cut thru foam.

Can this be used on bins that contains powders ?

Asked by: Mike54
No, it cannot. For powder/solids review our radar level sensors LR series.

Hello, Does the USR03 take a pulser and controller? Is it a plug and play?

Asked by: Roby
Thank you for your inquiry. The software that can be downloaded is to program the sensor to measure level and in the manual on page 26, you can find a wiring schematic of its use.

"Narrow beam with adjustments to optimize performance". What does this mean?

Asked by: Docal
Thank you for your inquiry. You can reduce the starting gain from the maximum 15 dB, which reduces the width of the most sensitive area in front of the sensor and removes the early sensitivity of the gain curve. It is changed on the Measure window under the Advanced button.
