Supported Applications

The Omega SGT Full Bridge Shear series provides transducer quality strain gages designed for shear and torsional strain applications. These components are utilized in the design of shear beam load cells and can be applied to measure reaction torque on a shaft.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The SGT series consists of full bridge configurations where four strain gages are mounted on one carrier piece, allowing two half bridges to function as one full Wheatstone bridge. The series offers nominal resistance options of 350 Ω and 700 Ω depending on the specific model pattern selected.

Maximum permitted bridge energizing voltage (Vrms) varies by termination type and temperature compensation material:

  • Ribbon Leads with Steel Compensation (ST): Models SGT-2DD/350-SY11 and SGT-3/700-FB11 support a maximum of 9 Vrms and 11 Vrms respectively.
  • Solder Pads with Steel Compensation (ST): Models SGT-2DD/350-SY41 and SGT-3/700-FB41 support a maximum of 9 Vrms and 11 Vrms respectively.
  • Ribbon Leads with Aluminum Compensation (AL): Models SGT-2DD/350-SY13 and SGT-3/700-FB13 support a maximum of 13 Vrms and 16 Vrms respectively.
  • Solder Pads with Aluminum Compensation (AL): Models SGT-2DD/350-SY43 and SGT-3/700-FB43 support a maximum of 13 Vrms and 16 Vrms respectively.

Configuration Options

The series is configurable across two primary gage patterns, resistance values, termination methods, and temperature compensation materials. The model number guide follows the format SGT-<SERIES>-<RESISTANCE>-<PATTERN>-<TERMINATION>.

Gage Patterns and Dimensions

  • SGT-2DD Pattern: Features dimensions of 1.6 mm (0.063), 1.7 mm (0.067), 7.6 mm (0.299), and 8.9 mm (0.350). This pattern is available with a nominal resistance of 350 Ω.
  • SGT-3 Pattern: Features dimensions of 1.9 mm (0.075), 3.4 mm (0.134), 9.8 mm (0.386), and 8.2 mm (0.323). This pattern is available with a nominal resistance of 700 Ω.

Termination Options

  • Ribbon Leads: Available on models ending in SY11, SY13, FB11, and FB13.
  • Solder Pads: Available on models ending in SY41, SY43, FB41, and FB43.

Temperature Compensation Materials

  • ST (Steel): Models designated with 1 or 4 as the second digit of the suffix code (e.g., SY11, SY41).
  • AL (Aluminum): Models designated with 3 as the second digit of the suffix code (e.g., SY13, SY43).

Key Product Differences

Variants within the SGT series are distinguished by their gage pattern size, nominal resistance, and termination style. The 350 Ω models utilize the smaller SGT-2DD carrier piece (7.6 mm actual size), while the 700 Ω models utilize the larger SGT-3 carrier piece (9.8 mm actual size). Each model is supplied as a package of 5 units.

Selection between Ribbon Leads and Solder Pads determines the specific maximum voltage rating for each temperature compensation material, with Aluminum compensated versions generally supporting higher energizing voltages than Steel compensated versions within the same termination category. Are these gages encapsulated? Also, is it recommended to further encapsulate the gage with adhesive after installation if used outside?

Asked by: BDwyer55
Yes these gauges are encapsulated in a polyimide carrier. If used outdoors we suggest apply some sort on addition coating over the gages. A flexible rubber sealant would probably work well

Can I use those cells for a torque monitoring application. If yes, then how long those last without failing for fatigue use. Im in a project that needs to have everything pretty small, and those cells may fit well. Thanks

Asked by: Mariolito
Yes you can use these gages for torsional (torque) measurement on a shaft. Life should indefinite as long as you do not exceed the maximum strain rating of the gage.
