Supported Applications
The Omega SA1 series consists of self-adhesive polyimide fast response surface thermocouples designed for rapid temperature measurements on flat surfaces. These sensors feature a 'ribbon type' hot junction secured between high-temperature fiberglass cloth and electrically insulating polyimide film, enabling installation without epoxy or cement. The product overview specifies use cases requiring quick thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.
Key application constraints include:
- Surface Temperature Measurement: Designed for direct contact with surfaces up to the rated temperature limits.
- Non-Human Use: The documentation explicitly states these products are not designed for, and should not be used for, human applications.
- Temporary or Semi-Permanent Mounting: The silicone polymer adhesive backing allows for easy installation and removal; however, it is noted that the backing was designed for easy removal but not for repetitive reapplication.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The SA1 series operates within a temperature range of -60° to 177°C (-75° to 350°F) as defined by the pad and adhesive material ratings. The thermocouple wire itself is limited by individual type ratings; for example, long-term use of Type T (30 AWG) is noted as limited to 149°C [300°F].
Performance specifications include:
- Response Time: Better than 0.3 Second.
- Accuracy Class: Meets or exceeds Special Limit of Error (SLE) and EN 60584-2 Tolerance Class 1.
- Long-Term Rating: Rated to 175°C (350°F) long term.
The sensors utilize 30 AWG PFA-coated thermocouple wire. Electrical connection requires connecting the red wire to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal of a temperature measuring device.
Configuration Options
The SA1 series offers configurable options across sensor types, lead lengths, terminations, and packaging accessories. The model number structure follows the pattern SA1---.
Sensor Types (Calibrations)
- Type J
- Type K
- Type T
- Type E
Lead Lengths and Wire Specifications
The series supports multiple lead lengths with 30 AWG (0.010" dia) PFA-coated wire:
- Standard Lengths: 1 m (40") is the base length.
- Extended Lengths: 2 m (80") and 3 m (120") are available options.
Termination Options
Sensors can be ordered with stripped ends or molded strain relief connectors:
- Stripped Ends: Standard termination for direct connection to measuring devices.
- SMP Male Connector: Available via the -SRTC suffix (molded strain relief).
- M12 Connectors: Options include male straight M12 plug (M12-S-M) or male right-angled M12 plug (M12-R-M). These are added to the model number for additional cost.
Accessories and Packaging
- Packaging: Probes are typically supplied in packages of 5 (e.g., -SC variants).
- Spool Caddy: Available for convenient storage, specifically noted with the miniature connector and spool caddy configurations. Note that 2 m (80") is the longest length available with a spool caddy.
Physical Dimensions
The sensor pad dimensions are specified as:
- Pad Size: 19 x 25 x 0.3 mm (0.75 x 1.00 x 0.012").
- Overall Width/Height: 13 mm (0.5 in) wide, 19 mm (0.8 in) tall.
- Thickness: 0.5 mm (0.02 in).
Key Product Differences
Variants within the SA1 series are distinguished by thermocouple type, lead length code, and termination style.
- Type Designation: The first suffix indicates calibration (J, K, T, or E).
- Length Codes: Numeric suffixes denote wire length: -72 for 2 m (80") and -120 for 3 m (120"). Models without a numeric suffix default to the standard 1 m (40") length.
- Connector Suffixes: The -SRTC suffix indicates an SMP male connector with molded strain relief. Variants ending in -SC include a miniature connector and spool caddy package of 5 probes.

Inexpensive monitoring
Purchased the thermocouples with 120 inch cable to monitor bearing temperatures on inaccessible vacuum pumps. For $20 each it is an extremely cost effective way to monitor these devices.

Best out there!!
Consistent quality. Fast shipping when in stock. Out of the hundreds used, I've only seen a couple flaws (off center probe, adhesive cover cut too deep). Best out there for their ease of use, quality and consistent results.

Accurate, quick and easy to use.
Accurate, quick and easy to use surface mount thermocouples, with a good strong adhesive that does NOT leave a nasty residue when removed.
I only wish they came in T-type.

I am working on a study that requires the heat capacity of the thermocouple to be included in the calculation, so can I get how much it is?
Thank you for the inquiry. We do not have a calculated heat capacity unfortunately. But you may be able to calculate given known materials. The adhesive tape used is CHR-K100-Tape-1Mil-PI-TDS-1117.
The single sided glass tape is 0.007” thick.
The double sided SA tape is 0.0045” thick.
The total thickness comes out to 0.020” thick
Dimensions of the pad are located in the manual; https://assets.omega.com/manuals/M0503.pdf
And 2 thermocouple legs extend to the center of the pad. The legs are of thermocouple alloy, 0.010" diameter.
Best regards,
OMEGA

Are these thermocouples resistant to electrical noise? How can I shield these thermocouples?
Hi Varll,
Thank you for the inquiry. The SA1 series have a polyamide film on the top and bottom of the thermocouple element. This insulates the TC from electrical noise via direct contact with process. If you experience electrical noise via RF please contact us for more solutions.
Best regards
OMEGA

Are these thermocouples suitable for an outdoor application? Specifically installation on the back of a solar panel for extended periods of time (> 6 months).
Yes, I have used these for that exact application with some Kapton tape on the TC and they work well.

What is the life expectancy in a heat cycling application with 50 psi applied?
Thank you for your inquiry Bob58. These probes are not pressure rated and they have not been tested on pressurized environments. We do not recommend the use of this probe in pressure environments. Life expectancy for any of our of products depends on the frequency the product is used.

Can I use this Thermocouple and connector with the wireless unit SS-002-0-NA?
Thank you for your question. You have to purchase the model thermocouple with stripped leads because SS-002-0-NA has screw terminals for wire connection.
