Supported Applications

The Omega OMNI-AMP IV is a high-performance, rugged epoxy encapsulated thermocouple amplifier designed for signal conditioning in industrial environments. It provides amplification and cold junction compensation for Type E, J, T, or K thermocouples using a 10 mV/°F scale factor. The series also accommodates Types R, S, and B when configured with the optional 1 mV/°F scale factor option.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The amplifier operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 55°C (32 to 130°F) and supports a storage temperature from -20 to 80°C (-4 to 175°F). It delivers a ±10 VDC output into a minimum load resistance of 10 kΩ. Performance specifications include an input impedance of 2 MΩ (differential), infinite resolution, and nonlinearity of ±0.005%. Stability after a 30-minute warm-up is rated at 2 μV/°C (1 μV/°F) for zero drift and ±0.01%/°C (±0.006%/°F) for span stability, with long-term span stability of ±0.05%. The unit features a frequency response that rolls off 40 dB/decade after dropping 3 dB at 1.5 Hz.

Electrical protection includes input tolerance up to 115 VAC or DC common mode or differential, and the output is continuous short circuit proof. Noise rejection capabilities include a Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) of 120 dB minimum @ 60 Hz and a Normal Mode Rejection ratio of 80 dB minimum @ 60 Hz.

Key Performance Metrics

  • Cold Junction Compensation: ±0.045 °C/°C (±0.025 °F/°F)
  • Noise (RTI) 0 to 1.5 Hz: 1.4 μVRMS
  • Common Mode Range: +10 to -10 VDC or 20 Volts peak-to-peak AC
  • Power Consumption: 3 VA maximum @ 115 VAC (or 230 VAC)

Configuration Options

The OMNI-AMP IV series is configurable across several dimensions to meet specific installation and measurement needs. The unit features rugged terminal strips for electrical connections, requiring a screwdriver for termination.

Housing and Mounting

  • Enclosure: Rugged epoxy encapsulated housing (100% encapsulated).
  • Dimensions: 73 H x 95 W x 51 mm D (2.87" x 3.75" x 2.0").
  • Weight: 455 g (18 oz).
  • Mounting Options: Supplied with bolts for standard mounting; a DIN rail mounting kit is available as accessory model number DIN400.

Signal and Power Configuration

  • Scale Factor: 10 mV/°F (standard) or 1 mV/°F (optional for Types R, S, B).
  • Burnout Direction: Configurable as Up Scale (-01 code) or Down Scale (-02 code).
  • Power Supply: Available in 115 VAC @ 3 VA maximum (code -115, range 105 to 125 Volts AC, 50-60 Hz) or 230 VAC (code -230, range 210 to 250 Volts AC, 50-60 Hz).

Key Product Differences

The series is distinguished by the thermocouple type supported and the resulting scale factor. Models ending in "3" (e.g., OMNI-AMP IV-13-115) utilize a 10 mV/°F output for Types J, K, T, and E. Models ending in "4" (e.g., OMNI-AMP IV-14-115) utilize a 1 mV/°F output specifically for Types R, S, and B.

Model numbers further differentiate the burnout direction: codes starting with "1" indicate Up Scale (increase in temperature), while codes starting with "2" indicate Down Scale (decrease in temperature). The final digits denote the power line voltage compatibility (-115 for 105 to 125 VAC, -230 for 210 to 250 VAC).

Wire color coding is provided per thermocouple type: J (White/Red), K (Yellow/Red), T (Blue/Red), E (Purple/Red), and R/S/B (Black/Red). The terminal strip assignments include dedicated terminals for OUTPUT, CMN, AMBIENT OUT, +INPUT, -INPUT, and AC power connections.

What is the isolation voltage between the thermocouple and the amplifier? For example if you have a thermocouple attached to a sample and charge the sample with a bias, at what point is the isolation compromised?

Asked by: Marcus
Hi Marcus, Thank you for the inquiry. Input protection to 115 VAC or DC. Over 120 dB CMRR at 60 Hz. Manual gives good detail on the hardware. https://assets.omega.com/manuals/M2074.pdf Best regards OMEGA
