Supported Applications

The Omega PR-16 series consists of handheld RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) utility handle probes designed for portable temperature measurement. The series features an easy-grip molded handle and a retractable cable system, allowing the probe to be stored in toolboxes or other locations for convenient access during field operations.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The PR-16 series offers three distinct model variants—PR-16L (Low), PR-16H (High), and PR-16E (Extreme)—each covering specific process temperature ranges. The PR-16L supports -58 to 250°C (-58 to 482°F). The PR-16H covers -50 to 450°C (-58 to 842°F), while the PR-16E extends from -200 to 600°C (-328 to 1112°F).

Accuracy specifications vary by model and temperature span. The PR-16L provides Class A accuracy across its range. For the PR-16H, performance is Class A from -50 to 300°C (-58 to 572°F), or else Class B outside this interval. The PR-16E delivers Class A accuracy from -100 to 450°C (-148 to 842°F), with Class B performance elsewhere.

Response time (T90) depends on the probe diameter and model variant. For example, a 1/8" PR-16L responds in 2.4 seconds, whereas a 1/8" PR-16E requires 9 seconds under comparable conditions. All models utilize standard PT100 Ω or PT1000 Ω elements with a TCR of 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C.

The series meets specific mechanical durability standards: IEC 60068-2-6 for vibration (5 to 2000 Hz sweep rate, one active per minute; number of sweep cycles 10 and acceleration 5g) and IEC 60068-2-27 for shock (50g/11ms). Ingress protection is rated IP67 for PR-16L and PR-16E models.

Configuration Options

The series supports a wide range of configurable dimensions to accommodate different installation needs:

  • Diameters: 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 inch options are available across all models.
  • Probe Lengths: Standard lengths include 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 18, and 24 inches. Custom lengths may be built using the manufacturer's configurator.
  • Cable System: A 3-conductor retractable cable is standard at 1 foot in length but expandable to 5 feet. The wire material is TPE (coiled).
  • Termination: Standard termination consists of stripped-end lead wires; other terminations may be configured.

Key Product Differences

The PR-16 series distinguishes itself through three primary model families defined by temperature capability and ingress protection. The PR-16L (Low) variant is optimized for lower temperatures up to 250°C with Class A accuracy throughout its range and includes IP67 rating. The PR-16H (High) model extends the upper limit to 450°C but does not carry an ingress protection rating in the specification table; it maintains Class A accuracy only within a narrower band (-50 to 300°C). The PR-16E (Extreme) variant covers the widest range from -200 to 600°C, includes IP67 protection, and offers faster response times than standard probes at equivalent diameters due to its specific construction.

All variants share identical nominal resistance standards (100 Ω or 1000 Ω at 0°C) and TCR values. Differences in performance are strictly tied to the selected temperature range model and probe diameter, which directly influence response time metrics as documented in the specification table.
