Supported Applications
The Omega LVU500 Series is a reflective ultrasonic level transmitter designed for continuous measurement in small tanks. The series utilizes proprietary Reflective Technology™ to provide reliable distance or range measurements between the transducer and process media, specifically engineered for condensing environments. Documented applications include day tanks, IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers), drums, cooling towers, skids, process tanks, and waste sumps.
The series is suitable for measuring chemicals, water, wastewater, and oil, provided the liquids are non-foaming and/or not highly vaporous. The transmitter provides a 4 to 20 mA analog signal output alongside four SPST relays for alarm or control functions in general-purpose classifications.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The LVU500 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -31° to 140°F (-35° to 60°C) and a process temperature range of -40° to 176°F (-40° to 80°C). The unit features automatic temperature compensation. Pressure ratings are specified at 30 psi (2 bar), with derating applied @ 1.667 psi per degree C above 25 °C.
Performance specifications vary by model range:
- Lvu501 Range: Measures from 1.5" to 4.9" (3.8 cm to 1.5 m) with an accuracy of ±0.125" (3 mm), a resolution of 0.019" (0.5 mm), and a dead band of 1.5" (3.8 cm).
- Lvu503 Range: Measures from 4' to 9.8' (10.1 cm to 3 m) with an accuracy of ±0.2% of range, a resolution of 0.039" (1 mm), and a dead band of 4" (10.1 cm).
Both models share a beam width of 2" (5 cm). The enclosure is rated IP68 / NEMA Type 6P.
Voltage & Signal Specifications
- Power Supply: 14-28 VDC with maximum consumption of 0.5W.
- Loop Resistance: 500 ohms @ 24 VDC.
- Analog Output: 4 to 20 mA, two-wire; configurable for signal invert (4-20 mA or 20-4 mA).
- Fail-Safe Options: Signal fail-safe can be set to 4 mA, 20 mA, 21 mA, 22 mA, or hold last value.
Contact Specifications
- Type: (4) SPST relays rated at 60 VA, 1A maximum.
- Fail-Safe Behavior: Configurable for power loss to hold last value; contact fail-safe options include open, closed, or hold last on power-on.
- Hysteresis: Selectable per relay configuration.
Configuration Options
The LVU500 Series offers configurable process connections and interface options to accommodate specific installation requirements. The housing is constructed from Polypropylene (PP-FR GF30), while the transducer element utilizes Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF). Electrical connectivity is provided via a 9-conductor, shielded cable with a polyurethane jacket.
Process Connections & Mounting
The series supports two primary process mount configurations:
- NPT Thread: 2" NPT connection (standard for models LVU501 and LVU503).
- G Thread: 2" G connection, which includes an FKM gasket.
Additional mounting accessories are available to extend installation flexibility, including bulkhead fittings in PVC (schedules 40 and 80) for various thread/socket combinations ranging from 3" to 4", as well as side mount brackets made of Polypropylene for both NPT and G threads.
Configuration & Interface
The transmitter features non-volatile memory and is configured via WebCal® PC Windows® software using a USB interface. Variants are available with or without the included LVU500-USB FOB (Fob) for programming:
- With Interface: Models ending in no suffix or "G" include the Fob.
- Without Interface: Models suffixed with "B" are supplied without the USB interface.
Key Product Differences
The LVU500 Series is differentiated primarily by measurement range and process connection type, resulting in distinct physical dimensions for each model family. The series includes eight enabled variants covering all combinations of range (LVU501 vs. LVU503), thread standard (NPT vs. G/BSPP), and USB interface inclusion.
Model Dimensions
The physical footprint varies between the short-range and long-range models:
- Lvu501 Family: Height 1.75" (44.5 mm), Width 2.9" (73.7 mm), Diameter 1.5" (38.1 mm).
- Lvu503 Family: Height 4.0" (101.6 mm), Width 2.75" (69.9 mm), Diameter 1.96" (49.8 mm).
The cable length is specified as 4' (121.9 cm) for the series, with a diameter of 1.875" (47.6 mm). The internal wiring includes dedicated conductors for power (+/-), transmit/receive signals, and four relay outputs plus common.
Compliance & Approvals
The LVU500 Series carries CE and RoHS compliance markings. Additionally, the series meets UL 61010-1 standards for safety in laboratory equipment environments.

Is the FOB used on the LVU501 the same FOB that is used on the LVCN318?
Thank you for your inquiry about the ultrasonic level sensor. Unfortunately, no.

Hi, what recommended display could you propose me for used with this sensor , because this tank have 15' and I need read the level in the ground.
Thank you for your inquiry! Our platinum series meters are universal input meters and will operate with the 4-20 mA output from the LVU500 series. These meters can be configured to have different sizes and outputs based on your specific needs.

Is the IP rating sufficient for outside mounting on top of a silo exposed to rain/snow? Media level being measured is sawdust. Thank you.
Thank you for your inquiring for this level sensor. It does have a IP6 rating that provides outdoor protection to a degree, yet, unfortunately, this sensor is meant to measure liquids, not solids. Please email flow@omega.com and can provide other level sensors for solid measurement.
