Supported Applications

The Omega LVRD500 Series is a pulse radar level transmitter designed for non-contact, continuous liquid level measurement. The series utilizes improved microwave-pulse technology and 'echo marker' signal processing to operate reliably in environments where ultrasonic sensors are not acceptable, specifically those containing vapor, dust, or foaming surfaces.

Documented applications include measuring material levels under a layer of light dust or airy foam (limited by particle size or thickness). The sensor is engineered for use with materials that can reflect the radar beam away from the receiver due to rat-holing, bridging of solids, or angled process material surfaces. A metal tank bottom is required to stop the microwave signal.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The LVRD500 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 60°C (-40 to 140°F). The series offers measurement ranges starting from 0.254 m (10") up to 30.48 m (100'), with specific model configurations covering 15.24 m (50') and 30.48 m (100'). Accuracy is specified as ±0.25% of maximum range in air.

Resolution varies by model: LVRD501 and LVRD502 models provide 5.6 mm (0.22 inch) resolution, while LVRD503 and LVRD504 models offer 11.2 mm (0.44 inch). The enclosure rating is NEMA 4 (IP65).

Performance Specifications

  • Measurement Range: 0.254 to 15 m (10" to 50") or up to 30.48 m (100')
  • Accuracy: ±0.25% of maximum range (in air)
  • Ambient Temperature: -40 to 60°C (-40 to 140°F)
  • Resolution: 5.6 mm (0.22 inch) or 11.2 mm (0.44 inch), depending on model
  • Enclosure Rating: NEMA 4 (IP65)

Configuration Options

The LVRD500 Series is configurable across several dimensions including communication ports, power supply wiring, measurement range, and housing materials. The series supports both DC-powered 3-wire models and AC-powered 4-wire models.

Communication & Output Options

  • Analog Output: 4 to 20 mA with 6.1 μA resolution; load resistance R = (Vs–6)/24 mA, max 750 Ω (isolated on 4-wire models only).
  • Digital Communication: RS232 or RS485 communications port.

Housing & Antenna Materials

  • Housing Material: Aluminum standard; optional 316 SS housing (available with PTFE units only).
  • Antenna Material: Polypropylene or optional high-resistance PTFE.
  • High Temperature Option: HT antenna available for temperatures up to 204°C (399°F) by adding the "-HT" suffix.

Process Connections & Mounting

  • Standard Connection: ½ NPT standard electrical connection; process mounting via 2 NPT metal or plastic flange.
  • Sanitary Option: Optional 2" Tri-Grip™ sanitary mount (Tri-Clamp® compatible) with PTFE antenna, designated by the "-S" suffix. This option is available only on LVRD501 series models.

Power Supply Configurations

  • AC Power: 115 Vac at 60 Hz or 230 Vac at 50 Hz (±20%), consuming 1.7 VA for 4-wire models.
  • DC Power: 12 to 30 Vdc @ 0.07 A maximum, with a nominal 24 Vdc supply for 3-wire models.

Key Product Differences

The series is divided into four primary model families based on range and power configuration:

  • LVRD501 & LVRD502 Series: Offer a 15.24 m (50') measurement range with 5.6 mm (0.22 inch) resolution. The LVRD501 is DC-powered (3-wire), while the LVRD502 is AC-powered (4-wire).
  • LVRD503 & LVRD504 Series: Offer a 30.48 m (100') measurement range with 11.2 mm (0.44 inch) resolution. The LVRD503 is DC-powered (3-wire), while the LVRD504 is AC-powered (4-wire).

Model numbers follow the format: LVRD501 - <COMMUNICATIONS PORT> - <RANGE> - <POWER/WIRING>. For example, LVRD504-RS232 indicates a 30.48 m (100') range with AC power and an RS232 port.

Additional suffixes modify the base configuration: "-PTFE" for PTFE antenna, "-HT" for high temperature capability, "-316SS" for stainless steel housing, and "-S" for sanitary mounting (LVRD501 only).
