Supported Applications
The Omega Quick Disconnect Handheld Thermocouple Surface Probes (Series HYP-5-SMPW-SURF) are designed for fast interchangeability in laboratory, industrial, and natural science applications. The series utilizes miniature connectors to interface with compatible handheld meters or data loggers.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The probes meet or exceed Special Limit of Error (SLE) per EN 60584-2, Tolerance Class 1 accuracy standards. Process temperature ratings vary by probe style and calibration:
- Hypodermic needle probes: rated to 200°C (400°F)
- Penetration probes with conical tips: rated to 925°C (1700°F)
- Reduced-tip, fast-response probes: rated up to 925°C (1700°F)
- Air probes and general purpose immersion probes: rated to 260°C (500°F)
- Ceramic tip probes with spring-loaded thermocouples: rated to 650°C (1200°F)
Calibrations are available in J, K, T, and E types. The series includes a retractable cable that measures 0.3 m (1') and stretches to 1.5 m (5'). Wetted materials include 304 SS and Ceramic.
Configuration Options
The HYP-5-SMPW-SURF series offers multiple probe configurations tailored for specific measurement geometries:
- Hypodermic Probe (Style A): Features a 38 x 0.79 mm (1.5 x 0.03") needle intended for laboratory, industrial, and natural science applications.
- Penetration Probe (Style B): Conical tip designed for penetration into semi-frozen objects; 3 mm (¹⁄₈") diameter with a 75 mm (3") insertion length.
- Reduced-Tip, Fast-Response Probe (Style C): Diameter reduces from 3 to 1.5 mm (¹⁄₈ to ¹⁄₁₆") at the tip for rapid thermal response; stem length is 150 mm (6").
- Air Probe (Style D): Drilled end exposes bead to air flow; features a 4.5 mm (³⁄₁₆") diameter shield and 1.5 mm (¹⁄₁₆") tip.
- General Purpose Immersion Probe (Style E): 3 mm (¹⁄₈") diameter probe for liquid or bulk material immersion.
- Ceramic Tip Probe (Style F): Features a spring-loaded thermocouple to ensure consistent readings in high-temperature environments up to the rated limit.
The series includes a black utility handle with an integral locking mechanism that secures any miniature probe while in use. A quick-connect probe kit is available, including all styles shown (A-G) and the handle.
Key Product Differences
Variants within this series are distinguished by their physical tip geometry and maximum temperature rating rather than a single universal specification. The hypodermic style offers the lowest temperature limit at 200°C (400°F), while penetration and reduced-tip styles support measurements up to 925°C (1700°F). Air probes and immersion probes are limited to 260°C (500°F) due to their specific shield designs. The ceramic tip probe provides a distinct high-temperature option rated to 650°C (1200°F) with internal spring loading.
Model numbers follow the pattern TK-3-(†) - - - , where users must specify calibration as J, K, E, or T. Some models require specifying calibration as J, K, or E only. Probes are sold separately from handles unless ordered as a complete kit.
