Supported Applications

The Omega OM-DAQ-USB-2401 is an 8/16-channel thermocouple and voltage input USB data acquisition module designed for portable data acquisition applications. The series supports user-programmable inputs for Type J, K, T, E, R, S, B, and N thermocouples or software-configurable voltage ranges from -30 to 30 mV up to ±10 V full scale.

Documented use cases include benchtop operation, DIN rail mounting in rack applications, or wall-mounted permanent installations. The module is designed for dry, moisture-free indoor environments only and includes built-in cold junction compensation and open thermocouple detection when channels are configured for thermocouple sensors.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The OM-DAQ-USB-2401 operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) and a relative humidity rating of 0 to 95% RH non-condensing. Storage temperatures are specified from -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F). The device provides 24-bit resolution with sequential measurement at approximately 1 ms per channel, achieving up to 1000 samples per second total across all active channels.

Performance specifications vary by input type and mode. In very slow mode (typical), thermocouple accuracy is listed as J = ±1.1°C, K = ±1.2°C, T = ±1.1°C, E = ±1.0°C, R = ±2.5°C, S = ±2.6°C, B = ±3.3°C, and N = ±1.5°C. Cold junction compensation accuracy is ±1.0°C.

Analog input accuracy in very slow mode (typical) is 0.015% of reading + 0.004% of range +10uV for differential inputs, and 0.05% of reading + 0.01% of range +50uV for single-ended inputs (exclusive of noise). The module provides 500 V isolation between the input channels and the PC.

Configuration Options

The series supports configurable channel types on a per-channel basis, allowing mixed thermocouple and voltage measurements within the same unit. Power is supplied directly from a USB port (max 500 mA) or via an optional external power adaptor rated +7.5 to +12 Vdc.

  • Input Ranges: Thermocouples Type J (-18 to 1200°C), K (-129 to 1372°C), T (-101 to 400°C), E (-184 to 1000°C), R (204 to 1768°C), S (204 to 1768°C), B (538 to 1820°C), and N (-129 to 1300°C). Voltage inputs include -10 to 10V, -5 to 5V, -2.5 to 2.5V, -2 to 2V, -1 to 1V, -500 to 500 mV, -250 to 250 mV, -125 to 125 mV, -75 to 75 mV, and -30 to 30 mV.
  • Excitation: Provides +12 Vdc regulated output with a maximum total current of 67 mA for sensor excitation.
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0 full-speed interface compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports; supports up to 10 DAQ units per PC via self-powered or USB-powered hubs.
  • Mounting Options: Includes hardware for wall mounting (drill holes 5.50 inches apart) or DIN rail mounting adaptors.

Key Product Differences

The OM-DAQ-USB-2401 is the primary model in this series, described as an 8/16-channel thermocouple/voltage input USB data acquisition module. Rated 2 out of 5 by from OM-DAQ-USB-2400 - Beware when using w/ TCs I purchased four of these units (over time) for use with various thermal experiments involving building assemblies (temperature ranged from 0 to 100F). With 8 differential channels on each unit, this model seemed like a bargain and I've always looked to Omega for easy online shopping and competitive prices. When I started pairing these units together, I noticed pretty significant disagreements between TC readings when calibrating multiple devices at once. This disagreement wasn't resolved with offsets and scaling. I thought my devices needed calibrated, but digging deeper in the specs, I found the combined TC and cold junction compensation error for these units are +/-4F...not good for measurements requiring minimal absolute error, and worse than some of my old Omega handheld loggers. It would have been nice for the specs to provide the total measurement error, with CJC and TC errors together, as other products usually list them. Using this model for analog voltage signal logging has worked well, on the other hand, and the software is simple and easy to use. I'm upgrading to a DAQ-2416 to get better accuracy and I hope I can get more out of this unit even though the $$ per TC channel isn't that different from the USB-2400.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not live up to expectations. The OM-DAQ-USB-2401 was acquired for the purpose of running 5 to 8 load cells. It was recommended specifically for the job, by an Omega support engineer on the phone support line. When received, we found that the label on the top, identifying the ports, was 180 degrees off. We also found that the unit is very restricted with regards to excitation current! It is only capable of feeding 2 load cells, not 8. Very disappointing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Calibration issues Calibration Cert not offered but when we tried to calibrate the unit as required for our use, it failed. Had to return the unit for Omega to review because they said it was factory calibrated. If that's the case, then why would a cert not be offered? Frustrating.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from device works but software is limited For my job, I need to connect this device to others in my network, and we only use Linux Systems. Is there some way to config the data acquisition module using standard serial communication? I did make a program with python that can read serial port, but I not have any response. Greetings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Caution: Input volt/current spike can damage 2401 The unit is easily damaged if there is a voltage/current spike, this renders the 2401 device useless. This has happened on three of 4 Omega units. Easy to use, but unprotected. Ex: A suspected voltage spike occurred during DAQ, the unit(s) then began showing erratic thermocouple readings. We restarted all devices and found that the Omega 2401 would not "Configure."

Using the DAQ-USB-2401 unit with analog pressure sensors with 4-20mA output what resistor is required to convert the signal to a voltage, what software settings do you set the DAQ to for voltage input, and how do you get the actual sensor reading?

Is the DAQ compatible with windows 10? The software installs correctly, but the driver has not.
