Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 4000 Capsuhelic® Differential Pressure Gage is a mechanical instrument designed to measure differential pressures, vacuum, and pressure. The series provides indication for flowing fluids, pressure drop across filters, liquid levels in storage tanks, and other applications involving air, gases, or liquids.

Specific service configurations include:

  • Air and compatible gases: Standard aluminum case models are suitable for these media as well as oil-based liquids.
  • Water-based fluids: Requires the optional forged brass housing to prevent corrosion or damage in water services.
  • Hydrogen service: May be used with hydrogen where pressures are less than 35 psi when ordered with a Buna-N diaphragm.

The gage contains pressure within an integral capsule, permitting use on system static pressures up to 500 psig even when measuring differentials as low as 0.1 in w.c.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 4000 operates across a broad range of differential spans while maintaining specific accuracy tolerances based on the model family:

  • Accuracy: ±3% of full scale at 70°F (21.1°C) for standard models; ±2% on 4000S models; and ±4% on 4200, 4210, 4215, 4220, 4300, 4400, and 4500 series.
  • Pressure Limits: -20" Hg to 500 psig (-0.677 bar to 34.4 bar).
  • Ambient Temperature: 20 to 200°F (-6.67 to 93.3°C).
  • Mounting Orientation: The diaphragm must be in a vertical position for standard operation; consult the factory for other orientations.

The instrument features a 4" (101.6 mm) diameter dial face with overall dimensions of 2-19/32" depth and 4-45/64" height. Weights vary by housing material: 3 lb, 3 oz (1.45 kg) for the aluminum case and 7 lb, 13 oz (3.54 kg) for the brass case.

Configuration Options

The series offers extensive configuration options to match specific installation requirements:

  • Housing Materials: Standard die-cast aluminum with impregnated hard coating; optional forged brass housing required for water or water-based fluids. Special material diaphragms are available upon request.
  • Process Connections: 1/4" female NPT high and low pressure taps, duplicated—one pair on the top for air/gas service (to drain condensate) and one pair on the bottom for liquid service (to vent trapped gas).
  • Differential Ranges: Available in various scales including inches of water column (0-5.0 to 0-200 in w.c.), feet of water column, psid (0-5 to 0-20 psid), and bidirectional ranges such as 5-0-5 in w.c.
  • Options: Adjustable signal flag (-ASF); NIST traceable calibration certificate (-NIST); scale overlays in red, green, mirrored, or combination colors; custom scales reading directly in flow or heights.
  • Accessories: Standard accessories include two 1/4" NPT plugs for duplicate taps, four flush mounting adapters with screws, and four surface mounting screws. Optional items include flat flush mounting brackets (A-298), bleed fittings (A-314), pipe mount kits (A-610), and other mounting hardware.

Key Product Differences

Differences within the Series 4000 are defined by model number, range capability, and housing material:

  • Model Families: Models such as 4005* through 4100* cover low differential ranges in inches of water column. The 42xx series (e.g., 4205, 4210) covers psid ranges up to 20 psid. Bidirectional models include the 4310 (5-0-5 in w.c.) and 4330 (15-0-15 in w.c.).
  • Housing Selection: The aluminum case is standard for air, gas, and oil-based liquids. The brass case option (suffix B) is required specifically for water service.
  • Scale Customization: While standard scales are available in pressure units, custom scales reading directly in flow or heights can be specified.
