Supported Applications
The OMEGALAQ™ Liquid Temperature Indicating Lacquers are temperature-indicating liquids designed for monitoring temperatures on surfaces where solid markers may not leave a distinct mark. The product is applied to smooth surfaces including glass and polished metal, as well as fabrics, rubber, and plastics.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series operates by changing from dull-opaque to glossy-transparent when the specified temperature is reached. This phase change occurs on the order of milliseconds (0.001 sec). The lacquers are available for process temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C) with an accuracy of ±1.0%. Specific temperature points range from 175°F to 325°F, 400°F to 700°F, 750°F to 1200°F, and 1250°F to 1900°F.
Notes on operating conditions include:
- Certain temperature points are identified as best candidates for high vacuum applications.
- The product tends to outgas in a vacuum environment.
Configuration Options
The series is offered in 2-oz bottles of liquid lacquer, with model numbers following the format LAQ-0(*)G where (*) represents the temperature rating. For example, LAQ-0250G indicates OMEGALAQ™ liquid rated for 250°F (121°C). The series supports thinning to ensure workable consistency without affecting accuracy.
Available options and accessories include:
- TAP Adhesive Labels: Rated to a maximum of 356°F (180°C), supplied in packages of 100 per roll. Note that the source lists TAP labels as rated to 350°F, with an additional note specifying a maximum temperature of 180°C (356°F).
- GREEN LABEL THINNER: Available in 2 oz bottles or pint sizes.
- LAQ-KIT-(*)†† Experimental Kit: Includes 2 oz lacquer, 2 oz thinner, and 100 TAP adhesive labels. Temperature ranges for kits are available from 175° to 325°F.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the LAQ series differ by their specific temperature activation point. The catalog lists discrete temperatures across four primary bands:
- 175°F to 325°F band: Includes points such as 175°, 200°, 225°, 250°, 275°, 300°, 313°, and 325°.
- 400°F to 700°F band: Includes points such as 400°, 425°, 450°, 475°, 488°, 500°, 550°, 575°, 600°, 650°, and 700°.
- 750°F to 1200°F band: Includes points such as 750°, 800°, 850°, 900°, 950°, 1000°, 1050°, 1100°, 1150°, and 1200°.
- 1250°F to 1900°F band: Includes points such as 1250°, 1300°, 1400°, 1450°, 1500°, 1600°, 1700°, 1800°, and 1900°.

How can I imagine the process exactly? Once the limit temperature is reached, the consistency changes? Is there also a color change or is the substance then only transparent as described in the data sheet?
Thank you for your inquiry Laserdrilling123. At the start, apply a thin smear to the working surface before heating begins. It dries almost instantly to a mark. When the stated temperature is reached on subsequent heating, this mark liquifies sharply. A melted OMEGALAQ™ coating does not revert to its original dull-opaque appearance but remains glossy transparent which makes subsequent interpretation a simple matter. There is no color change.

I need this product for a ultrfast laser drilling process with stainless steel, so that you only have a very short temperature rise and then it drops directly down to room temperature. Can this temperature still be identified?
Thank you for your inquiry. This item has a very fast response time and will react as soon as the temperature value has been reach or exceeded.

What is the accuracy of the stated temperatures? Are there tolerances associated with each product type?
Thank you for your inquiry. The tolerance is ±1% of value.

Does this product work the same in an inert gas as it does in air? Does it work the same in a mild vacuum (~ 200 mTorr)? Will it outgas and form deposits in a vacuum chamber?
Thank you for your inquiry. OMEGA LAQ cannot be used in any vacuum environment.

I am trying to create a waste log and need the density of this product, is it available?
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately we do not have a density specification for this product.

Is OMEGALAQ oil resistant? I would like to use it on the races of a high speed ball bearing.
Hi Gerschman
Thank you for the inquiry. The LAQ material is not oil resistant.

Do the lacquers react differently depending on the gas environment they are in? I.e. oxygen, nitrogen,...
Hi Clair,
Thank you for the inquiry. The LAQ series were verified in standard conditions (STP) air environment. You would need to test to verify in alternate conditions, gases, pressures, etc.
Best regards,
OMEGA
