Supported Applications

The Omega OS-MINI Series comprises miniature, non-contact infrared temperature sensors designed for fixed installations where space is constrained. The series features a compact sensing head (Ø18 x 45 mm) suitable for tight spaces and includes an optional high-temperature version capable of withstanding ambient temperatures up to 180°C without cooling. Documented applications include measuring various materials such as food, paper, textiles, plastics, leather, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, rubber, coal, asphalt, painted surfaces, and many more.

The OS-MINI22 models within the series utilize a short measurement wavelength (2.0 to 2.6 μm) for greater accuracy and improved tolerance to optical obstructions compared to standard infrared sensors operating in the 8 to 14 μm range. A low-noise cable option is available, resistant to interference from movement, making it suitable for mounting on moving objects like robot arms.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series supports multiple measurement temperature ranges depending on the model configuration: -20°C to 100°C (LT), 0°C to 250°C (MT), 0°C to 500°C (HT), and 0°C to 1000°C (XT). The OS-MINI22 sub-series offers ranges of 100°C to 400°C, 250°C to 1000°C, and 450°C to 2000°C. Accuracy is specified as ± 1°C or 1%, whichever is greater for standard models, while OS-MINI22 models list accuracy of ± 2°C or 1% of reading, whichever is greater.

Performance characteristics include a response time (t90) of 240 ms and repeatability of ± 0.5°C or 0.5%, whichever is greater. The sensing head operates in ambient temperatures from 0 to 60°C for standard models, with the high-ambient option extending this range to 180°C. Electronics modules operate at 0 to 60°C. Environmental protection is rated IP65 (NEMA 4) for both the sensing head and electronics module, with a maximum relative humidity of 95% non-condensing.

Configuration Options

The OS-MINI Series offers extensive configurability across optics, output signals, interfaces, and mounting options to address specific process requirements.

  • Spectral Range: Standard models operate in the 8 to 14 μm range; OS-MINI22 models use a 2.0 to 2.6 μm spectral range for high-temperature or obstructed measurements.
  • Field of View (Optics): Available optics include 2:1, 15:1, 30:1, and Close Focus (CF) options capable of measuring a spot diameter as small as 5 mm at a distance of 100 mm. High-ambient models feature 20:1 optics.
  • Output Signals: Configurable outputs include 4 to 20 mA, RS485 Modbus (supporting up to 247 sensors on a single network), and alarm relay options.
  • Interface Options: Models are available with or without an optional touch screen display. The interface provides temperature indication, alarms, sensor configuration, peak/valley hold, reflected energy compensation, and data logging to MicroSD card (up to 2 GB).
  • Emissivity Adjustment: Adjustable emissivity settings range from 0.10 to 1.00 or 0.20 to 1.00 depending on the model class. Configuration is performed via two rotary switches in the electronics module (MA models), RS485 communication, or directly through the touch screen.
  • Alarm Relays: Specific models include 2 x Single Pole Changeover alarm relays rated at 24 V DC, 1 A, isolated 500 V DC.

Mechanical and Electrical Specifications

  • Sensing Head: Constructed from Stainless Steel 316 with an M16 x 1 mm thread for mounting. Dimensions are Ø18 x 45 mm.
  • Electronics Module: Die-cast aluminum construction, measuring 98(w) x 64(h) x 36(d) mm, designed for wall mounting with two M4 screws.
  • Cabling: Standard cable length is 1 m (sensing head to electronics module), extendable up to 30 m. Conductor size supports 28 AWG to 18 AWG via removable screw terminal blocks.
  • Power Supply: Requires 24 V DC ± 5% with a maximum current draw of 100 mA.

Options and Accessories

The series supports several accessories to enhance installation flexibility, including fixed brackets (OS210-FBS), adjustable brackets (OS210-ABS), air purge collars for specific optics models, laser sighting tools (OS210-LSTS), spare 2 GB MicroSD cards with adaptors, and extended sensing head cables.

Key Product Differences

The OS-MINI Series is divided into distinct model families based on spectral range, ambient temperature tolerance, and interface capabilities. Standard models (OS-MINI) utilize an 8 to 14 μm spectral range and are available with various optics ratios for different target distances.

Standard vs. High-Ambient Models

Standard sensing heads operate in ambient temperatures from 0°C to 60°C. The high-ambient variant (HA201) is designed for environments up to 180°C and includes a 20:1 optic, available with HT or XT measurement ranges.

OS-MINI vs. OS-MINI22

The OS-MINI22 sub-series differs by employing a shorter spectral range (2.0 to 2.6 μm) and offering higher temperature spans up to 450°C to 2000°C. Accuracy for these models is specified as ± 2°C or 1% of reading, whereas standard OS-MINI models list accuracy as ± 1°C or 1%, whichever is greater.

Interface and Output Configurations

Variants are distinguished by their output and interface codes:

  • -MA: 4 to 20 mA output without a display; emissivity set via rotary switches.
  • -D-MA: 4 to 20 mA output with touch screen, alarm relays, and full configuration capabilities.
  • -C4: RS485 Modbus output without a display.
  • -D-C4: RS485 Modbus output with touch screen, alarm relays, and data logging features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great product Our lab purchased two of these thermometers at 20:1. They are very easy to install and great for monitoring surface temperatures. The only real downside for our purchases was the 6 week lead time. The associated free software (OmegaConfig 1.08) is functional but a little clunky. Being able to switch between a digital temperature value and a graph while recording is handy, but the axes of the graph constantly autoscale, and it would be nice to be able to set these manually. The sensor logs all data automatically, so there's no separate save step necessary. This does mean parsing through a long log (.csv) file later, but there are handy divisions inserted in the file any time recording is stopped and restarted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Switching between C and F childproofed. Great sensor except for the fact that it took me a while to figure out how to change from deg. C to F. You'd think it'd be in the settings of the software or otherwise be very obvious. It's not obvious...

I'm wondering if the 4-20mA output is isolated so that if the PLC this would be wired to had the negative side of the loop tied to ground would it still work? An electrical drawing of the analog output circuitry would be ideal.

Asked by: GPDiver
Thank you for your interest in our Products The output is not isolated, so if the PLC input is connected to ground, there could be a ground loop if the electronics module housing and/or the sensing head metalwork are grounded. This would not cause too much of an issue provided there are no switching currents in the ground, and the ground connections are all close together. We do not have a Electrical drawing of the analog output circuity .

How close to the product does the probe need to be to accurately measure an in process manufactured consumable consumer good(food)? inches, 4-5', 10+ feet?

Asked by: Craig C
The sensor can measure from 10' away but the measurement spot size must be contained within the perimeter of what is being measured. The 20:1 ratio would have a 0.5" spot size right up at the lens and at 10' it would be about a 9" diameter. Refer to the diagrams on the data sheet to see what is the best distance to size ratio for your application.

Will this sensor allow reading of aluminum at a 45° angle to the material? Does reflection come into play here?

Asked by: cBoot
Highly reflective surfaces like Aluminum have a very low emissivity and are challenging to measure temperature with IR sensors. The closer to normal view the more likely a successful emissivity can be set and a valid reading can be achieved. In any case Omega recommends a physical sensor be used to make sure the IR sensor is set up and reading correctly.

Can I dip the sensor into a liquid? If it can, what is the max temperature of the liquid?

Asked by: N Ari
Thank you for your inquiry. N Ari. Unfortunately, this sensor cannot be exposed to any liquids. Exposure to liquids will damage the electronics in the sensor.

If I choose the no communication protocol option, will I be unable to download the temp vs time data?

Asked by: Justwondering
Thank you for the inquiry. Data logging to internal micro SD card is available with the models with display option. C4 communication option provides logging of current readings to PC. C4 does not provide download of data from the internal SD card. See manual for other software functions availalble with the C4 option. Best regards OMEGA
