Supported Applications
The Omega Magnetic Mount Thermocouples for Ferrous Metal Surfaces (Models 88401 and 88402) are magnetized thermocouple probes designed for long-term contact pressure on ferrous metal surfaces. These sensors provide surface temperature measurement capabilities where magnetic mounting is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series offers two distinct maximum service temperatures based on the model and insulation type:
- Model 88401: Rated to a maximum of 250°C (480°F), utilizing PFA-insulated lead wire.
- Model 88402: Rated to a maximum of 400°C (752°F), utilizing 'GG' fiberglass-insulated lead wire.
The probes require approximately 10 seconds to reach full surface temperature. Both models are supplied with an SMPW connector for electrical connection.
Physical Dimensions
- Model 88401: Width: 27.0 mm (1.06 in); Height: 19 mm (0.75 in); Depth: 19 mm (0.75 in).
- Model 88402: Width: 9.5 mm (0.38 in); Height: 16 mm (0.63 in); Depth: 38 mm (1.5 in).
Configuration Options
The series supports multiple thermocouple types and configurations to accommodate specific measurement needs:
- Sensor Types: Available with Type K or Type E elements.
- Housing Models: Model 88401 (PFA insulation) and Model 88402 ('GG' fiberglass insulation).
- Connector Options: Standard SMPW connector; IEC variants are available for specific models (e.g., 88401K-IEC, 88402K-IEC).
A TAS adaptor is sold separately. Replacement elements are offered for Model 88401 configurations:
- 88401K-RE: Replacement K element for 88401K.
- 88401E-RE: Replacement E element for 88401E.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between the two models lies in their maximum temperature rating and insulation material. Model 88401 is limited to 250°C (480°F) with PFA-insulated lead wire, while Model 88402 extends capability to 400°C (752°F) using 'GG' fiberglass-insulated lead wire.
A critical design difference affects maintenance: due to the construction of Model 88402, its element is not replaceable. Conversely, replacement elements are available for Model 8841 configurations. Both models share the same SMPW connector interface and magnetic mounting function but differ in physical dimensions as noted above.

Amazing Product
This product is a must have for any process engineer in the plastics injection molding field. I have purchased one of these magnetic thermocouples for all 3 companies that I have been a part of. It easily connects to a pyrometer, and is much more reliable for a accurate steel temperature reading than the spring type surface temperature thermocouples. The product is superior in accuracy because of the magnetic pull being constant vs a person pushing against the steel surface with a spring type thermopcouple.

Flat Stanley VLE
Well, it's not Stanley but the flat ribbon thermocouple is excellent under heating tape. The application is temperature control in a 100 ml glass boiler of a vapor liquid equilibrium VLE, with a second ribbon thermocouple monitoring for failsafe shutdown.

great product
We absolutely love these probes. The head of the probe is about 1 inch by 1/2 inch and the magnets are extremely strong no problem staying attached even through thick industrial finished pipes and machine housings. rapid response time like all omega probes.

Great product!
This is the best magnetic thermocouple on the market! I have tried a couple of others that have a less than desirable magnetic force.

data sheet shows need 10 seconds to read the full surface temperature, how about real time temperature logging? What is the response time?
Hi Seraph3
Thank you for the inquiry. Response time of the instrument would add to the response time of the sensor.
Best regards

Do you have a magnetic mount thermocouple rated for 1000 deg F?
Thank you for your inquiry Derick Kekona. Unfortunately, we do not offer a magnetic mount thermocouple rated for 1000 F. The maximum temperature for the magnetic mount thermocouples is 482 F.

Probe 88401K. What is its accuracy in the range 150C-200C?
Thank you for your inquiry Leon. The accuracy on this thermocouple for the full 0 to 250 C range is +/- 1.1°C or 0.4% whichever is greater.

When I purchase the Thin Leaf-Type Thermocouples, does it comes with the calibration certificate? or the calibration must be paid separately and what is the cost? thanks, Huy Le
Thank you for your inquiry Anonymous. The thin leaf-type thermocouples do not come with calibration. Please send a request for pricing for the probe and calibration at sales@omega.com
