Supported Applications

The Omega LD701 series consists of non-contact linear displacement sensors utilizing inductive technology to sense metal targets. These compact, sturdy units are suitable for industrial, robotics, and laboratory use. The sensors provide an analog output proportional to the distance from a damping target and are insensitive to dust, dirt, and oils.

Output signals can be read by panel meters, recorders, computer boards, or dataloggers available from Omega. Compatible meter models include DP25B-E, DP41-E, DP3002-E, and DP24-E.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The LD701 series operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 60°C (32 to 140°F). The sensors feature a repeatability of ±10 μm (0.4 μin) across all models and carry an IP67 enclosure rating.

Power is supplied via 14 to 30 Vdc @ 20 mA, which is unregulated and protected against reverse polarity and short circuits. The output signal ranges from 1 to 9 Vdc with a maximum load of 20 mA. Switching frequency (-3 dB) varies by model: LD701-1/2 and LD701-2/5 operate at 1000 Hz, while the LD701-5/10 operates at 500 Hz.

Linearity specifications differ by range:

  • LD701-1/2: ±4%
  • LD701-2/5: ±2%
  • LD701-5/10: ±4%

Variations by Model Range and Dimensions

The series is offered in three specific measurement ranges, each with distinct physical dimensions and thread specifications:

  • LD701-1/2: 1 to 2 mm (0.04 to 0.08 inch) range; M12x1 thread; SW17 nut; overall length C = 51 mm (2.01); diameter D = 10 mm (0.39).
  • LD701-2/5: 2 to 5 mm (0.08 to 0.19 inch) range; M18x1 thread; SW24 nut; overall length C = 65 mm (2.55); diameter D = 10 mm (0.39).
  • LD701-5/10: 5 to 10 mm (0.19 to 0.39 inch) range; M30x1.5 thread; SW36 nut; overall length C = 60 mm (2.36); diameter D = 10 mm (0.39).

Configuration Options

The LD701 series is constructed with a nickel-plated brass housing and utilizes inductive sensing technology compatible with various metal targets including mild steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and copper. The sensors are calibrated for use with mild steel (Fe 360, 1mm thick).

Electrical connections consist of 22 AWG pigtail leads (20 AWG for the 30 mm model) in a 3-conductor configuration. Wiring functions are color-coded: Brown (+ Excitation), Black (+ Output), and Blue (Common). The series includes CE certification.

Mounting accessories are available to support installation:

  • MBL-8/12: Mounting bracket for LD701-1/2
  • MBL-18/30: Mounting bracket for LD701-2/5 or LD701-5/10

Key Product Differences

Sensing distance is influenced by the target material. While calibrated for mild steel, correction factors apply when using other metals:

  • Mild Steel: 1.0
  • Stainless Steel: 0.75
  • Brass: 0.50
  • Aluminum: 0.40
  • Copper: 0.35

The series is not designed for use in patient-connected applications, nuclear installations, or medical applications on humans.

Hello, We looking to use LD701-2/5 for gap measurements in high rpm (up to 100,000 rpm) rotating machines. What is the excitation frequency of the sensor coil. Thank you Andrii

Asked by: Andrii
Thank you for your inquiry. There is no data available for these sensors being used at such high speeds.

Will this transducer be able to measure the changing gap of a ellipse-like surface as it rotates? the surface in question is presently being designed, so we can accommodate the appropriate width and height.

Asked by: mmongo
These sensors should work for measuring an ellipse rotating surface. Please note that the switching frequency of the sensor is 1000 Hz
