Supported Applications

The Omega OL-700 Series consists of linear thermistor probes designed for temperature measurement in water, air, soil, gas streams, and liquid immersion. These sensors are configured for general-purpose use as well as specific tasks including subsoil readings, cuvette temperatures, surface measurements on flat surfaces or piping systems, and monitoring within test rooms, incubators, and duct-work.

Specific probe styles address distinct installation needs:

  • General Purpose & Sub-soil: Models such as OL-701 are ruggedized for short-term water temperatures or burial in dry soil.
  • Flexible Measurement:
  • Surface Temperature: Options include the "Banjo" style (OL-708) for water baths and air, attachable probes with epoxy backing (OL-709) for heat loss studies on piping, and small disc sensors (OL-729) for leaves or cuvettes.
  • Air & Gas: Stainless steel probes like OL-705 are suitable for remote air readings and gas stream monitoring. The THX-700 series includes an Air Probe with a radiation hood designed to fit into duct-work, grilles, and vents.
  • Liquid Immersion & Rugged Duty: Tubular stainless steel probes (OL-703) are used for liquid immersion. The OL-710 features a pipe fitting for readings inside closed vessels or pipes.
  • Chemical Inertness: The Pyrex tubular-glass probe (OL-704) is specified for thermometric titration and freezing point determination where chemical inertness is required.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The OL-700 Series utilizes precision 44018 linear thermistor elements. The standard measurement range spans -50°C to 100°C (-58°F to 212°F), with accuracy specified as ±0.15°C from -30°C to +100°C (±0.27°F from -22°F to +212°F). The probes produce a varying voltage or resistance linear with temperature when used with suitable signal conditioning networks.

Response times vary by probe configuration, ranging from 0.3 sec for small surface sensors up to 9.0 sec for general-purpose vinyl-tipped models. Standard lead wire length is 3 m (10'), extendable upon request. The probes are rated for process temperatures up to 100°C (212°F). Storage should be maintained below 50°C, preferably at room temperature.

Configuration Options

The series offers a broad envelope of configurations including probe styles, sheath materials, and termination types. Standard probes feature a plasticized vinyl jacketed shielded lead wire terminated with a three-conductor phone plug connector. The THX-700 sub-series is designed for use with the Heavy Duty HDX handle and terminates in a 3-prong OTP-copper connector.

Key configurable attributes include:

  • Housing & Sheath Materials: Options include vinyl, epoxy, stainless steel (304), Teflon, Pyrex, PFA-covered flexible wire, and economical plastic housings.
  • Process Connections: Standard probes are available with or without fittings. The OL-710 includes a 1/8 NPT pipe fitting for installation in pipes or closed vessels. OMEGALOK® compression fittings are listed as an option.
  • Lead Wire Lengths: While standard length is 3 m (10'), longer leads up to 76 m (250') can be ordered by adding a suffix and specifying the length, with additional cost per 300 mm (12').
  • Special Configurations: Custom assemblies are available upon request. Specific models offer non-immersible epoxy tips for potting in place or attachable designs for taping to flat surfaces.

Key Product Differences

The OL-700 Series is divided into standard linear response probes and the THX-700 series designed for heavy-duty handles. The primary distinctions lie in probe geometry, sheath material, and intended mounting method.

  • OL-701 vs. OL-702: The OL-701 is a general-purpose vinyl-tipped probe noted as the most rugged for water temperatures (short term) or subsoil readings. The OL-702A/OL-702 features a small flexible design with a vinyl sheath and tip, intended for cuvette temperatures.
  • Surface vs. Immersion: Models like OL-731 are non-immersible epoxy-tipped probes suitable for surface measurements or potting in place. In contrast, the tubular stainless steel probe (OL-703) is designed for rugged liquid immersion duty.
  • Air Temperature Housings: The OL-705 uses a stainless steel housing for air temperature readings in test rooms and incubators. The OL-706 provides the same functionality with an economical plastic housing.
  • Tubular Variants: The OL-710 adds a pipe fitting to the tubular design for vessel or piping installation, while the OL-704 utilizes Pyrex glass for chemically inert liquid immersion applications such as titration.
