Supported Applications

The Omega KK-Wire series consists of Kapton® Duplex Insulated Thermocouple Wire designed for temperature measurement applications. The product line includes both TFE insulated and Kapton® duplex insulated variants, featuring fused tape insulation on conductors and jackets. While the broader family offers TFE options with superior abrasion, moisture, and chemical resistance, the Kapton® series is characterized by excellent moisture and abrasion resistance, high dielectric strength of 7 kV/mil, and retention of physical integrity after gamma radiation.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The documented maximum temperature for both TFE Insulated and Kapton® Duplex Insulated thermocouple wire is 260 °C (500 °F). The FEP adhesive binding agent used in the construction melts at approximately 260°C. Nominal dimensions vary by model, with examples including 1.5 x 2.5 mm (0.060 x 0.100 inch) and 1.3 x 1.9 mm (0.050 x 0.075 inch). Weight per length also varies; for instance, some models list a weight of 5 kg (11 lb)/1000' while others are listed at 3 kg (6 lb)/1000'.

Configuration Options

The series supports multiple thermocouple calibrations including J, K, T, and E. Wire construction is available in solid or stranded configurations (7 x 28, 7 x 32). The following options are documented for the series:

  • Insulation Types: Fused Polyimide Tape (Kapton®) or Fused TFE Tape.
  • AWG Sizes: Available in various sizes including AWG 20, 20S, 24, 24S, and 30.
  • Error Limits: Special limits of error (SLE) wire is available by adding 'SLE' to the model number before spool length.
  • Spool Lengths: Standard lengths include 25', 50', 100', 200', 500', and 1000'. Other calibrations and lengths are available upon request.
  • Protective Options: Metal overbraiding for improved wear and abrasion resistance, and electrical shielding for improved performance (consult sales).

Key Product Differences

The series distinguishes between two primary insulation types: TFE Insulated Thermocouple Wire and Kapton® Duplex Insulated Thermocouple Wire. The model number guide follows the format Type-Calibration-AWG No., such as KK-J-20 or TFE-K-24S. A key distinction noted in the documentation is that Kapton® wire is neither ANSI nor IEC color-coded, whereas TFE insulated options feature color-coded insulation on conductors and jackets. Model numbers for special limits of error include 'SLE' inserted before the spool length designation (e.g., KK-J-24-SLE-100).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD QUALITY it is a good quality wire and does support high temperatures as indicates spec.

What is the minimum rated temperature for this product? The datasheet linked on this page does not include it, and the product page lists 0C, but the datasheet for "Fine Gauge Thermocouple Wire" rates KK type insulation down to -267C. Which is it?

Asked by: SD123
The probes with Kapton insulation are rated for use down to -200C but below 0C they would be expected to meet the Standard Limits of Error accuracy specification unless calibrated.

I am looking for the cross sectional dimension of this wire. KK-J-24S-SLE-100 Thank you.

Asked by: JPaez
The cross sectional dimensions of KK-J-24S-SLE-100 wire are 1.3mm x 2.2mm or 0.050" x 0.085". The wire has more of a rectangular appearance much like a lamp cord.

We bought thermocouple K type (KK-K-24-100) which didn't have color code on it. How can I figure out which wire is negative or positive?

Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you for connecting with Omega Engineering. Type K thermocouple wire will have one red negative lead and one positive yellow lead.

Has KK-K-30-1000 been tested in vacuum environments? How much does it outgas?

Asked by: vacuumwire
Thank you for the inquiry. KK-K-30-1000 has not been tested in vacuum. The construction is kapton tape bonded with a PFA adhesive so there would be some outgassing due to the adhesive. Best regards OMEGA
