Supported Applications

The Omega KQXL/NQXL series comprises Super OMEGACLAD™ XL Thermocouple Probes designed for high-performance temperature measurement in demanding environments. These mineral insulated (MI) probes are engineered to resist carburization, oxidation, and chlorination. The series is available exclusively in Type K (CHROMEGA™-ALOMEGA™ XL Sheath) and Type N (OMEGA-P™-OMEGA-N™ XL Sheath) calibrations.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The probes are rated for process temperatures up to 1335°C (2400°F). The series meets or exceeds Special Limits of Error (SLE) and EN 60584-2: Tolerance Class 1. Temperature drift is specified as less than 2.8°C (37°F) in 25 weeks, with a documented capability for a 0.8 mm (0.032") probe to withstand 815°C (1500°F) for 3 years.

Response times vary by sheath diameter and are measured as approximate values for ungrounded probes in water:

  • 0.25 sec** (0.8 mm)
  • 0.3 sec** (1.6 mm)
  • 0.55 sec** (3.2 mm)
  • 2.25 sec** (6.4 mm)

Note: Tests were conducted using ungrounded probes in an open-air, electric muffle furnace versus a Type 'S', NIST-traceable standard. Individual results may vary depending on customer application.

Configuration Options

The series supports multiple probe styles and dimensional configurations to accommodate various installation requirements:

  • Probe Styles: Quick-Connect, Transition Junction (Miniature or Heavy-Duty), Industrial Head Assemblies, Utility Handle Probes.
  • Junction Types: Specify 'G' (Grounded), 'E' (Exposed), 'U' (Ungrounded), or 'S' (Surface).
  • Dual Element Configuration: Available upon request.

Sheath Diameters and Dimensions

  • Inch Sizes: 0.010 in, 0.020 in, 0.032 in, 0.040 in, 0.062 in, 0.125 in (1/8"), 1/16", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8".
  • Metric Sizes: 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.5 mm, 6.0 mm, 8.0 mm, and 9.5 mm.
  • Lengths: Standard inch lengths include 6 in, 12 in, 18 in, and 24 in; metric options include 150 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm, and 600 mm. Custom lengths are available.

Connectors and Accessories

  • Mating connectors and clamps are sold separately; see accessory charts for compatible parts.
  • Probes with 0.032" diameter (and larger) or 0.75 mm diameter (and larger) are supplied with molded transition joints. Smaller-sized probes feature stainless steel transition joints with stripped leads standard.
  • M8/M12 Plug Options: Add "M8-S-M" for male straight M8, "M8-R-M" for male right-angled M8, "M12-S-M" for male straight M12. Note: The source lists "M12-S-M" as the code for both straight and right-angled M12 plugs.
  • PFA Coating: Order standard model number with suffix '-PFA' (max 200°C / 400°F).

Key Product Differences

The series is divided by calibration and sheath material. Type K probes utilize the CHROMEGA™-ALOMEGA™ XL Sheath, while Type N probes use the OMEGA-P™-OMEGA-N™ XL Sheath.

  • Quick-Connect Probes: Model prefixes include KQXL/NQXL for standard inch sizes and SCAXL/SNNXL or KMQXL/NMQXL for miniature diameters (e.g., 0.010" to 0.125"). Metric quick-connect models use the M suffix in the diameter code.
  • Transition Junction Probes: Identified by prefixes such as TJ36-CAXL/TJ36-NNXL for standard sizes and KMTXL/NMTXL or SCAXL/SNNXL variants for miniature diameters. Metric transition junctions follow similar naming conventions with M suffixes.
  • Industrial Head Assemblies: Replacement probes are available under the NB(*) prefix (e.g., NB-CAXL-18). These assemblies include industrial head housings.
  • Utility Handle Probes: Identified by prefixes KHXL/NHXL with suffix '-RSC' for replacement probe configurations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Machined Beautifully This temperature probe I purchased will be used for measurement of gas temperatures up to 2100 deg. F (although generally much lower). It was delivered precisely as described and it will be used to collect data for EPA air emission tests at industrial facilities. I am very pleased with the quality of this temperature sensing Type K probe.

for KQXL 18" 1/8 diameter, exposed, ungrounded or grounded, what is the highest voltage thermocouple wires can sustain to the cladding sheath ? In other words max voltage between both tc wires to the cladding sheath?

Asked by: bob222
Thank you for the inquiry. We do not provide an insulation rating for the metal sheath to TC element. Best regards OMEGA

I need a probe and connector I can insert in a campfire up to 800 degrees C with the meter 2-3 ft from the fire. Do you have a product that can do this?

Asked by: bowzer
Thank you for your inquiry. The KQXL-116U-6 can measure the temperature of the air above the campfire but not the fire itself. Heat sources can cause damage to the probes when exposed to it. Additionally, only the metal probe is rated for temperatures up to 800 C, the connector cannot be exposed to that temperature. It's only rated up to 180 C. If you have any further questions, please call 1-888-826-6342, ask for Temperature Engineering and speak to one of our temperature engineers over the phone.

Hi! Is this thermocouple (KQXL-18U-18) bendable?

Asked by: milankovich
Hi Milan, Yes, thermocouples can have a bend radius no less than 3 times it’s diameter. Bending the thermocouple probe will not cause any harm the probe unless it is bent to a point exceeding the limit stated.

How do you test your High temperature Model XL Thermocouples? DO you do it electronically, or do you use a drywell. If you use a drywell do you use ceramic inserts or Inconel or something else? Or do you use a salt or sand bath? Thanks You

Asked by: red pepperhead
Thank you for the inquiry. To provide high temperature calibrations our calibration lab uses a combination of metal alloy well, ceramic well, and salt bath. For more detail please forward request to TEMP@OMEGA.COM. Best regards OMEGA

Would the KQXL-14U-12 be able to be inserted directly into a pipe that water runs through? Or would it be recommended that it be installed in a thermowell?

Asked by: EMan5150
The probe can be installed directly in flow but if there is any significant velocity to the flow it is not recommended. Care must be taken to ensure the flow isn't capable of shearing the probe off especially if it is extended 12" into it..
