Supported Applications

The Omega KHXL and NHXL series comprises Super OMEGACLAD® XL thermocouple probes designed for high-temperature measurement in harsh environments. These mineral-insulated (MI) handheld probes are engineered to resist carburization, oxidation, and chlorination. The series supports Type K (CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA®) and Type N (OMEGA-P®-OMEGA-N®) calibrations.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The probes operate in process temperatures up to 1335°C (2400°F). Accuracy meets or exceeds SLE and EN 60584-2 Tolerance Class 1 standards. Long-term stability is documented as less than 2.8°C drift in 25 weeks.

Response time varies by sheath diameter for ungrounded probes tested in water:

  • 0.3 sec** for 0.032" Dia. probe
  • 0.55 sec** for 0.125" Dia. probe
  • 2.25 sec** for 0.250" Dia. probe

Note: Tests were conducted using ungrounded probes in an open-air, electric muffle furnace versus a Type 'S', NIST-traceable standard.

Configuration Options

The series offers extensive configuration options across probe styles, dimensions, and junction types to accommodate specific installation needs.

  • Probe Styles: Quick-connect (molded), miniature connector, heavy-duty transition junction, industrial head assemblies, and utility handle probes.
  • Junction Types: Grounded (G) or ungrounded (U). Some configurations include exposed options depending on the specific model series.
  • Diameters: Available in standard inch sizes from 0.010" to 3/8", and metric sizes including 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.5 mm, 6.0 mm, 8.0 mm, and 9.5 mm.
  • Lengths: Standard lengths include 6", 12", 18", and 24" (inch series) or 150 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm, and 600 mm (metric series). Custom insertion lengths are available via ordering codes.
  • Sheath Materials: CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA® XL Sheath for Type K; OMEGA-P®-OMEGA-N® XL Sheath for Type N.

Additional options include dual-element configurations and PFA coating (consult sales). A universal connector and cable clamp are included with the probes. Replacement probes are available for industrial head assemblies by adding '-RP' to the part number.

Key Product Differences

The series is divided into two primary alloy families based on thermocouple type:

  • KHXL Series (Type K): Utilizes CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA® XL Sheath. Model numbers begin with 'K' or include the ANSI color code for Type K.
  • NHXL Series (Type N): Utilizes OMEGA-P®-OMEGA-N® XL Sheath. Model numbers begin with 'N' or include the ANSI color code for Type N.

Variations also exist by connector style and housing:

  • Quick-Connect Probes (KQXL/NQXL): Feature molded standard connectors. Miniature versions are designated with 'M' in the model number (e.g., KMQXL).
  • Transition Junction Probes (TJ36/KMTXL/NMTXL): Designed for heavy-duty transition junctions or miniature transition junction probes.
  • Industrial Head Assemblies: Feature replaceable probe elements. Model numbers typically include 'NB' prefixes in the ordering guide context, with replacement parts ordered by adding '-RP'. Smaller-sized probes are supplied with stainless steel transition joints and stripped leads as standard.
  • Utility Handle Probes (KHXL/NHXL): Designed for handheld use with a utility handle configuration. Model numbers include the 'RSC' suffix in many variants to denote specific connector or assembly configurations.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality product Worked for less than a year then stopped. Was used 2-3 times x week measuring hot water and then stored dry. for the price we paid we are very dissastisfied with the longevity of the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product, took forever to ship! Product works incredibly well but be wary of freight/shipping times. Ordered mid-July, called beginning of August to get an ETA and they said end of August. Didn't actually ship till I called again mid-September and arrived the following week. Other than that, great product.

Hello, does this product work in direct contact with molten metals up to the 2400F, or is there some sort of sleeve you might recommend in addition to this T/C?

Asked by: Turbo LS1 GTO
Thank you for your inquiry. This product is not suited for multiple uses in molten metal applications.

Is this product food safe?

Asked by: Zukken
Hi, this thermocouple probe is made from a high temperature metal which can go to 2400F but is not specifically rated for food applications or sanitary. We do have this probe which can be used with frozen foods: https://www.omega.com/en-us/sensors-and-sensing-equipment/temperature/sensors/thermocouple-probes/p/88312-SPECIAL-TC-PROBE Please email temp@omega.com if you need any further assistance.
