Supported Applications

The Omega DCP-485 series consists of fully isolated RS-232 to RS-485 converters designed for compact installations requiring electrical isolation and surge protection. The device supports full duplex operation over two-wire pairs and enables multidropping configurations up to 32 units on a single network segment.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The DCP-485 provides complete electrical isolation with optical couplers and a DC-to-DC converter rated for 1500 VRMS continuous common mode isolation. The unit includes industrial surge protection capable of handling 6000 Vdc surges (1 min) and features 15 kV ESD protection on inputs and outputs.

Performance specifications include support for data rates up to 115.2 K BPS across standard baud rates including 57.6 K, 38.4 K, 19.2 K, 9.6 K, 4.8 K, and down to 0-2.4 K bps. The converter operates within an ambient temperature range of 0 to 60°C (32 to 140°F) with a storage range of 0 to 70°C (32 to 158°F). It functions in relative humidity from 0 to 95% non-condensing and at altitudes up to 4574 m (15,000'). The RS-485 output drive is rated for 28 mA max/output with an input impedance of 12 kΩ min/input.

Communication Modes

  • Modes: Asynchronous 4-wire duplex, 2-wire half duplex, and 2-wire simplex.
  • Channel Lines: (1) TD (Transmit Data), RD (Receive Data).
  • Control Lines: (1) RTS (Request to Send), DTR (Data Terminal Ready).

Configuration Options

The series is configurable via DIP switches and connector options. The unit features four diagnostic LED indicators and mounts on a standard DIN rail.

DIP Switch Configuration

  • TD Term: Switches a 120 Ω termination resistor across the RS485 transmit data lines TD A & TD B.
  • RD Pull Up/Term/Pull Dn: RD Term switches a 120 Ω termination resistor across the RS485 receive data lines. RD Pull Up and RD Pull Dn switch pull up/pull down resistors to RD A' and RD B', respectively.
  • TD Cont En/Ctrl'd: Selects continuous enable or RS232 side signal control of the RS485 transmitter.
  • RD Cont En/Ctrl'd: Selects continuous enable or RS232 side signal control of the RS485 receiver.

Physical and Electrical Options

  • Connectors: Male or female EIA 9-pin D sub connectors, or a 3-wire RS232 connection via plugable solderless screw terminals.
  • Null Modem Switch: Reverses RS232 pins 2 and 3.
  • Power Supply: 10 to 30 Vdc @ 150 mA max.

Key Product Differences

The DCP-485 series is offered in two distinct connector configurations as defined by the model number guide (DCP-485 - <Connector Type>):

  • DCP-485-P: Isolated RS232/RS485 converter with a male RS232 9-pin connector.
  • DCP-485-S: Isolated RS232/RS485 converter with a female 9-pin connector.

The unit dimensions are 109 H x 84 W x 22.5 mm D (4.3 x 3.3 x 0.89") and the weight is 130 g (4.6 oz). The series carries CE approval and includes a 1 YEAR WARRANTY.
